PRE-LAB QUESTIONS
1. Over the past 100 years, the average life expectancy in the U.S. has increased by
almost 30 years. What are some factors you believe could be attributed to this
drastic increase in average lifespan? Conduct outside research if necessary.

Answer :

Life expectancy in U.S have been increased due to reduction of death rates. Availability
of best medicines, excercise, stress free life, healthy diet etc are some reasons of
increase life expectancy in U.S.

2. What are the four motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease and how do they affect
the people afflicted?

Answer :

Tremors : It makes the shaking movement of body parts or limbs.

Bradykinesia : slow movements results due to stiffness and rigidity.

Imbalance in postures leads into trouble in walking and standing.

Mental and behavior issues appear which depicts the unsual and weird speaking and
activities.

3. Using resources online, identify and describe an age-related disease not

discussed in the introduction. Be sure to include potential causes of the disease
and how it affects the patient.

Answer :

Cardiovascular disease is one of the important disease. It is caused by unhealthy diet,

smoking, overweight, high cholesterol, diabetes, family history. These leads to severe
problems of heart.

EXPERIMENT 1: SUNPRINTING FOR SKIN CANCER

Data Sheet

Table 1: Sunprinting

Samples Observations UV Index

Control As a whole blue 3

SPF 30 White (spotty) 3

SPF 50 Almost complete white 3

Post-Lab Questions

1. Which square was exposed to the most U.V. light?

Answer :

Control square was most exposed to UV light.

5. What do you expect would happen to the sunprint paper if the UV index was
higher than what you recorded? What would happen if the UV index were lower?

Answer :

Higher UV index results in better results and clear observation. Lower UV index leads in
difficult observation.

6. Imagine that the sunprint paper is an analogue for your skin. Would you expect a
sun burn from any of your tests?

Answer :

Yeah ! As the control was bluest in appearance and there was no sunscreen.

7. Look up skin cancer on the Mayoclinic website (www.mayoclinic.org). What is one

cause of skin cancer?

Answer :

Excessive exposure to sun

8. Using your online resources, this experiment, and the lab introduction, discuss
how skin cancer, sun burns, telomeres, and aging are related. Consult your
professor for rules of citation.

Answer :

Too much UV light in sun creating much of damage in burn areas. Excessive exposure
to sunlight caues DNA damage of telomeres. With aging, length of telomeres also
decreases by damage. Both UV light and aging are the factors that results in cancer due
to damaging of telomeres. Cells divide at rapid rate.

9. Design another experiment to test the effects of different agents on UV exposure

using the sunprint paper (e.g., baby oil, cooking oil, different sunscreen, higher or
lower UV index, etc.). Record your observations in a table and discuss your
results.

Answer :

We used regular lotion and see if even 1 layer, even with no spf received better results
than the control group
