All questions carry equal marks
---

1.a) Obtain the expression for the unit weight of soil mass in terms of its void ratio, specific
pa
gravity and degree of saturation.
b) Describe briefly different types of soil structures.
c) Discuss about three phase system. [5+5+5]
pe
2.a) Explain the laboratory procedure for determining the percentage fines by Hydrometer
analysis.
b) Classify the soils as per IS code method. [8+7]
r1
3.a) The results of a constant-head permeability test for a fine sand sample having a
diameter of 150 mm and a length of 300 mm are as follows:
1-
Constant head difference = 500 mm
Time of collection of water = 5 min
volume of water collected = 350 cm3
06
Assume that the same soil is kept for the variable head test, what should be the area of
stand pipe for the drop of head from 250 mm to 120 mm in 8 min.
b) Explain any one In-situ permeability test with a neat sketch. [7+8]
-2
4.a) Discuss about the principle of effective stress and quick sand condition.
b) What are the characteristics of flow net?
0
c) A soil profile consists of a top layer of sand 3m thick and γ=17kN/m3, an intermediate
clayey silt layer 2m thick and γsat=15kN/m3 and a bottom layer of gravel 4m thick and
19
γsat=19kN/m3. The water table is at the top of clayey silt layer. Determine the effective
stress at 3m, 5m and 9m from ground surface. [5+5+5]

5.a) Explain the method of construction and use of Newmarks’s influence chart.
PM
b) The four legs of a transmission tower form in plan a square of side 4m and together
carry a total load of 200kN. Compute the increase in vertical stress at a depth of 3m
vertically below a Leg. Use Boussinesq’s theory
c) Describe briefly (i) pressure bulb concept and (ii) contact pressure. [5+5+5]

6.a) Define compaction in soil mass. Draw the compaction curve and show its salient
features. Explain the factors affecting compaction of soil sample.
b) What are the quality control tests which can be conducted in embankments or
pavements? Explain briefly. [7+8]
7.a) Explain the terms ‘Normally consolidated’ and ‘Over consolidated’ soils.
us
b) A layer of compressible clay of 4m thick is with pervious sand at top and impervious
rock at the bottom. In a standard consolidation test on an undisturbed specimen of
clay from this deposit, 90% settlement reached in 4 hours under 200 KPa. The
specimen was 20mm thick. Estimate the time in years for the building (which
ed
induces a pressure of 200 kN/m2) founded over this deposit to reach 90% of its final
settlement. [7+8]

8.a) Draw a neat sketch of a vane shear apparatus. Also, derive a relationship between
pa
undrained shear strength and torque.
b) Explain briefly about direct shear test and tri-axial test. [8+7]
