-CAIRO - 31 July 2019: The Ministry of Antiquities announced the
discovery of part of a huge building from the Greek-Roman era, which
was probably the senate. The discovery was made by the Egyptian
expedition working in North Sinai.

Head of the Egyptian Antiquities Sector Ayman Ashmawy stated that

the building is built of red bricks and limestone, and is about 2,500
square meters. It has a rectangular shape from the outside with circular
strips from the inside. It has a main gate on the eastern side that flows
to the main street of the ancient city of Belozium, a part of which was
revealed during the excavations this season.

-The Mediterranean Coastal strip of North Sinai stretching between the

Suez Canal and Ghaza as the most important land bridge linking Egypt
and Canaan.

-The well-traveled high ways of the North Sinai facilitated the military
expeditions of the Egyptian pharaohs on their way to Canaan and Asia
as well as the invading arms of Persia, Greece and Rome.
-An ancient cave decorated with distinguished engravings depicting
scenes of animals has been discovered at Wadi Al-Zulma in North Sinai.

"The newly discovered cave is the first of its kind to be discovered in

the area,” said Aymen Ashmawi, head of the ancient Egyptian
antiquities sector at the Ministry of Antiquities.

Ashmawi explained that the scenes carved inside the cave are
completely different from those found in South Sinai, having a special
artistic style that resembles raised relief in execution.

Studies are underway to determine their date.

Hisham Hussein, head of the discovery mission, said that most of the
discovered scenes are carved along the cave’s inner walls and depict
animals, including camels, deer, mules, mountain goats and donkeys.

The remains of circular stone buildings have been discovered around

200 meters of the cave. These likely constitute the remains of an
ancient settlement.
