HIV Epidemic estimates at the end of 2020
Malawi as a UN member state is a signatory to the 2016
political declaration to accelerate the fight against HIV and
end AIDS epidemic as a public health threat by 2030.
The UN Fast track targets entails that by 2030:
 90% reduction in new HIV infections amongst adults from
2010 levels
 95% of people living with HIV (PLHIV) know their HIV status
 95% of people with known HIV status should be on ART
 95% of people on sustained ART should achieve
undetectable viral load

Towards Epidemic control in 2020

CONCLUSION
Malawi is making significant progress towards achieving the
UNAIDS Fast track targets. However, granular data analysis
shows remarkable disparity by age and population. New HIV
infections are still unacceptably high among young people
especially AGYW and Key populations. Furthermore,
treatment coverage among these populations is below the
national median coverage. Also, testing coverage among
children is low. Programmers must design and implement
tailored youth- friendly interventions that addresses the needs
and aspirations of young people
