Demonstration and describe music forms, notation, instruments and

performances.
TSW take notes in their music class journals.
(Technology Smart Board/See attachment)
TTW introduce the sitar to the students as an instrument that is
used in Indian music and shares some basic characteristics with
the guitar. Both are stringed instruments with frets and can play
melodies and harmonies. TTW play the melody to “Norwegian
Wood” on the guitar and ask students if they recognize the tune.
TTW play the Beatles version again and ask the students to
compare and contrast the difference in sound between the guitar
and the sitar (used by the Beatles). TTW introduce timbre to the
students and explain that the same melody played by different
instruments can sound different to the listener because of the
sound quality or timbre of each instrument. (L.S Auditory)
TTW replay an excerpt of the Ravi Shankar video where he is
playing a very fast and complex passage. TTW introduce the
terms virtuoso, tempo, and improvisation. TTW ask students to
comment on how Ravi Shankar is sitting on stage (on the floor)
and how it differs from how western musicians perform. Finally
the teacher will display the sheet music for the Beatles song
“Norwegian Wood” that will include the chords (harmony) used
and the melody. TTW ask students to contrast and compare the
differences in how a melody is notated and how the chords are
notated and if they can define the terms used.

Now we will divide the class into groups and create a short
