MODULE 3:

HAVE / HAVE GOT

• Use

1. Have got means the same as have to talk about possession, but the form is
very different. We often use have got in spoken English.
2. Have to expresses a general obligation. The obligation comes from
“outside”- perhaps a law, a rule at college or work, or someone in
authority.
You have to have a driver’s license if you want to drive a car
(that’s the law.)
We have to start work at 8:05 a.m. (Our company says we must.)

3. Have got to can be used to express a specific obligation. This is something

that must be done “right now”.
It’s 10 o’clock. I’ve got to open the valves.
4. Don’t/doesn’t have to expresses absence of obligation (it isn’t necessary).
You don’t have to purchase new excavators they can be used ones.
The boss doesn’t have to supervise us every day.

5. When have + noun expresses an activity or a habit, have and the

do/does/don’t/doesn’t forms are used. Have got is not used.
Compare these sentences:
We have a break every day at 10:30 a.m.
We’ve got a break every day at 10:00 a.m.

He’s never got holidays on January

He never has holidays on January
6. In past tense, the got forms are unusual. Had with did and didn’t is much
more common.

I had a special training before starting this task.

We didn’t have enough money when we wanted to buy a mini excavator.

Did you have a 3,000 pounds Hydraulic excavator?

The storekeeper had a lot of screws in the warehouse.
