 Students will be able to learn about BCG matrix.

Learning Outcome:

 Students will be able to understand the BCG matrix. Furthermore, students

will be able to position business units in their respective quadrants.

The Case:

XYZ corporation has a diverse portfolio of businesses ranging from food products to personal care

products. The outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic had brought new challenges for all organizations as

well as XYZ corporation. The current situation has put the corporation in a dire need to analyze its

decisions regarding product lines and resource allocation. They want to position their business units

on the Boston consulting group matrix. The positioning will help them to formulate the appropriate

strategy for each business unit to allocate resources. In this regard, the company has appointed you as

a “strategic analyst” to perform portfolio analysis, and to allocate each business unit a place in the
BCG matrix. The management has provided the following information regarding the business units.

Unit A: It is a high-capacity utilization unit. Their cash inflows and outflows are high and are a source

of value addition for the corporation. Their market share is high but the industry is getting mature.

Unit B: They are operating at break-even points. Their contribution in value addition is low with low

research and development expenses.

Unit C: It is a low-capacity utilization unit. Their demand is high in the market but not generating

much cash. They spent large amounts of cash on research and development and have potential to

innovate and attract buyers.

Unit D: Their market expenditures are high as they made high investment to attract new customers

and to maintain their market position.

Requirements: (2+2+6)

Please answer the following questions based on the above information

1. Identify the strategic position of each unit on BCG matrix

2. Suggest the most appropriate strategy for each unit with proper justification.

Important:
