➢ Expressing QUANTITY - QUANTIFIERS

The quantity, or amount, of a "thing" can be expressed by numbers (exact quantity) or by
quantifiers (expression/adverbs of quantity), which give us an approximate quantity. The "things"
which quantities are expressed can be countable (the exact amount can be expressed only by
numbers) or uncountable (when we need a measure unit with the number to express the exact
quantity). The quantifiers used differ if the noun is countable or uncountable.
• NO – used both with countable or uncountable nouns, sentences in which the verb is in the
affirmative form, expresses quantity ZERO (negative idea).
I have no money with me.
Mary has no books on her school bag today.
• LITTLE / FEW – LITTLE is used with uncountable nouns and FEW with countable, both
express a small quantity.
I like my coffee with little sugar.
Carlos is very shy, he has few friends at school.
• *SOME - used both with countable or uncountable nouns to express an indefinite quantity,
not small not large, usually when the exact quantity or number that we are thinking of is
not so important. It is used in affirmative sentences. It can be used in interrogative
sentence when it is a request or an offer. It is never used in negative sentences.
I need some new clothes.
During the summer we need to drink some water every couple of hours.
Where can I find some good sandwiches to order?
Do you have some money to lend me?
Would you like some cookies?
Can I get you some juice?
• *MUCH/MANY - MUCH is used with uncountable nouns and MANY with countable, both
express a large quantity. They are used in negative and interrogative sentences, but not in
affirmative ones.
We didn`t have much milk left today, I have to go shopping later.
Do you have much homework to do?
There aren`t many restaurants near my school.
Do you have many friends at school?
• *A LOT OF – used both with countable and uncountable nouns, expresses a large quantity.
It is used in affirmative sentences and emphasizes the idea of being a large amount of
something.
There is a lot of rain in this region this time of the year.
He has a lot of money.
There are a lot of beautiful places to visit in Brazil.
I have a lot of things to do this afternoon.
• *ANY – expresses an indefinite quantity or number, used in interrogative and negative
sentences.
There isn`t any meat left in the refrigerator.
I don`t have any eggs at home.
Do you have any idea where she might be?
Do they offer many brands of juice in this supermarket?

➢ Emphasizing the QUANTITY – TOO and ENOUGH

We use too with much or many (too much , too many) to emphasize a large quantity to
express a negative meaning of this quantity (the idea of more than necessary).
I think Maggie puts on too much salt in her salad.
Don`t buy too many chocolate bars at once, you need to lose weight.

We use enough to express that the quantity we have is the exact/sufficient amount needed.
It can be used in negative sentences when the quantity expressed is not sufficient for
our needs.
I have enough money to buy this.
I don`t have enough time to finish this exercise.
Do they buy enough milk for the weekend?
Are there enough plates for everyone?
