1.1 Contents
The FOUNDATION Fieldbus Engineering Guideline is separated into sections. The following is
an explanation of the intent of each chapter:
Section 01 – Introduction
The purpose and scope of the FOUNDATION Fieldbus Engineering Guidelines, references used
to compile FOUNDATION Fieldbus Engineering Guidelines and terms used specifically with
FOUNDATION fieldbus technology.
1.2 Purpose
The FOUNDATION Fieldbus System Engineering Guideline is intended to compliment the
principal’s instrument specifications. It details how fieldbus devices are specified, installed,
configured, commissioned, which are different than conventional analog or "smart"
instruments.
This Engineering Guideline addresses the implementation of FOUNDATION fieldbus only. Other
fieldbus technologies exist that may be integrated into the basic process control system, if the
engineering design requires. FOUNDATION fieldbus is primarily used to replace the traditional
analog input/output signal types, but is also used with discrete devices such as on/off valves
and electric actuators. Moreover, FOUNDATION fieldbus transmitters often take the place of
process switches. FOUNDATION fieldbus technology is chartered by the Fieldbus Foundation.
1.3 Scope
This document will provide the definition of the design, specification, installation, configuration,
commissioning for a FOUNDATION fieldbus-based control systems. A second Application Guide
will be developed to define the Operation, Maintenance, and Asset Management of
