Special issue in honor of Susan Montgomery

This issue of the Journal of Algebra is dedicated to Susan Montgomery, who served as an editor
for the Journal for over twenty years.
Susan’s interests and influence in ring theory and Hopf algebras have been ubiquitous. Her book
“Hopf Algebras and their Actions on Rings” is considered the best modern reference for the area.
She was the principal lecturer at a CBMS Conference on Hopf algebras. In addition to her influential
writings, her mathematical offspring has made substantial contributions as well.
A conference was held in her honor in February 2009 and many of the speakers have written
articles for this issue. The breadth of subjects covered is testimony to the depth and breadth of Susan’s
work.
