St. Xavier’s University is pleased to announce Ph.D.


Programmes in Commerce, Mass Communication, English,
Management and Economics for the academic session 2021-2022. I
invite students, faculty and industry professionals to join the
Programme under supervision of Faculty Supervisors supporting the
timely and successful completion of their research degrees. I expect
that during their research journey, the scholars will embrace the
values of research ethics and integrity as set out in the University’s
Code of Good Research Conduct and step out in the academic,
research and professional world with the ethos of being a true
Xaverian.

Message from The Ph.D. Programme Coordinator
St. Xavier’s University is poised to create a conducive
ecosystem for research. It is expected that Ph.D. scholars would
make original contributions in their respective fields that helps in
expanding the knowledge frontiers. I welcome you to become a
part of St. Xavier’s University PhD Programme which is an ever-
expanding knowledge network at the University and excel in your
pursuit for knowledge. The Ph.D. Programmes offered by the
University shall be governed by St. Xavier’s University Ph.D.
regulations 2019.

Ph.D. Programmes Offered:
The subject areas in which the University offers admission to Ph.D.
Programmes are:
* Ph.D. (Commerce)
* Ph.D. (Mass Communication)
* Ph.D. (English)
* Ph.D. (Management)
* Ph.D. (Economics)

Ph.D. Programme Fee:


A. Application Fee:

INR 2500 (at the time of Online Application).

B. Fee Details:

The year wise fees will be as follows: -


Rs. 100000 (one lac rupees) in the first year and Rs. 100000 (one lac rupees) in each year
from second year onwards. Security Deposit (Refundable) of Rs 10000 (ten thousand
rupees)
The Annual fee of Rs. 100000 for every year can be also paid in two equal Installments
(Optional) as per University guidelines.
Please note that the minimum period for submission of Ph.D. Thesis is 3 years (Including
Coursework) and maximum period for submission of Ph.D. Thesis is 6 years (Including
Coursework)
C. Accommodation
The outstations students may get hostel accommodation in the Campus, if available. The
hostel charges will have to be paid separately by student as per the prevalent rules.
Eligibility Criteria
Ph.D. (Commerce) Master’s degree in the subject concerned or allied / relevant
subject with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent
grade ‘B’ in the UGC – 7 point scale or any equivalent degree
from a foreign educational institution accredited by an
assessment and the accreditation agency (approved, recognised
or authorised by an Authority for this purpose)

Ph.D. Master’s degree in the subject concerned or allied / relevant


(Mass Communication) subject with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent
grade ‘B’ in the UGC – 7 point scale or any equivalent degree
from a foreign educational institution accredited by an
assessment and the accreditation agency (approved, recognised
or authorised by an Authority for this purpose)

Ph.D. Master’s degree in the subject concerned or allied / relevant


(English) subject with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent
grade ‘B’ in the UGC – 7 point scale or any equivalent degree
from a foreign educational institution accredited by an
assessment and the accreditation agency (approved, recognised
or authorised by an Authority for this purpose)

Ph.D. (Management) Master’s degree in the subject concerned or allied / relevant


subject with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent

from a foreign educational institution accredited by an
assessment and the accreditation agency (approved, recognised
or authorised by an Authority for this purpose)

(Economics) subject with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent
grade ‘B’ in the UGC – 7 point scale or any equivalent degree
from a foreign educational institution accredited by an
assessment and the accreditation agency (approved, recognised
or authorised by an Authority for this purpose)
Note:
1. A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50% or an equivalent relaxation of
grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/differently abled /
Christian Minority and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the
University.

2. The candidate will have to appear in the Research Entrance Test (XU-RET) -
Online. The syllabus of the entrance test shall consist of 50% of research
methodology and 50% shall be subject specific. XU-RET will be of two hours
duration for Ph.D. (Commerce), Ph.D. (English), Ph.D. (Mass Communication)
and Ph.D. (Economics) and the question paper will be of MCQ (Multiple
Choice Question) type consisting of two sections {Section – 1 Research
Methodology [50 marks, 25 questions of 2 marks each]} {Section – 2
Discipline – Specific [50 marks, 25 questions of 2 marks each]}. XU-RET will
be of two hours duration for Ph.D. (Management) the test will be of 50 MCQ
(Multiple Question type) 2 marks each with total of 100 marks. Test will have
two sections (50 marks each) Research Methodology and Management
(Discipline specific). The section on Research Methodology will test on
research orientation, aptitude, research designs, methods and analysis. The
Section on Management will have 5 questions on General Management, 5
questions each on Finance, Marketing, HR, Systems and Operations. The
Research Entrance Test will be followed by interview on the subject concerned.
For selection of the candidate, weightage of 70% to the Research Entrance Test
and 30% to the performance in the interview shall be given.

3. Those candidates who have already passed M. Phil / UGC NET / SET need not
appear for the XU-RET and can directly apply to appear for the interview,
provided they fulfill the minimum eligibility criteria as mentioned above.

Application Form and Prospectus for the Ph.D. Programme can be downloaded
from the Ph.D. Programme link in the website www.sxuk.edu.in Candidates
applying for Ph.D. Programme need to follow the application procedure stated
below:
Step 1:
Go to the Ph.D. Programme link in the website www.sxuk.edu.in and register
yourself by clicking the “Register” link
Step 2
Log in to fill the Basic Information Sheet and submit
Step 3
After submission you will be directed to the payment gateway. Make the
payment of Application Fee INR 2500 and generate an Acknowledgement slip.

Step 4
Download the Application Form and fill in the details attaching documents
against proof of qualifications, Experience, publications etc.
Step 5
Attach the Acknowledgement slip with the filled in Application form (with the
attachments) and send it to the address below: -

Important Enclosures with Application Form
1. Copy of “Statement of Purpose” for the proposed Ph.D.
Programme, clearly indicating the Research Interest / Discipline
/ Area objective, etc. (2 Pages)

2. Self-Attested copies of certificates & mark-sheets of qualifying


degrees and other certificates (from SSC level).

3. One passport size colour photograph (to be affixed on


Application Form).

4. Two letters of recommendation (in the format provided in the


Application Form).

5. One example of scholarly research or professional writing


(Preferable)

6. Acknowledgments slip along with application form.


Doctoral Colloquium
The Doctoral Colloquium is designed to provide supportive and
constructive platform to the Ph.D. Scholars of St. Xavier’s University,
Kolkata and the Ph.D. Scholars of other Institutions of repute in India and
abroad.
St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata organised Colloquium on 3rd and 4th
October 2020 in blended format.
