It was first performed by John Wilbraham and The London Collegiate Brass Ensemble conducted by Edward Gregson at Southwark Cathedral on 22 February 1979. NOTE ‘The concerto is in three movements, the last two being joined by a short cadenza, the material makes use mainly of idiomatic trumpet figuration, an additional feature being the parts for timpani and percussion in which important thematic ideas are to be foimnd. The central slow movement is concerned with textural contrast between low clusters and high repetitive figuration which is associated with the soloist, whose material finally leads to the linking cadenza already referred to. As an interlude in this process the only overt ‘tune’ in the work is heard from the soloist who is joined, briefly, by the other solo instruments in the band. ‘The many motifs are unified by the use of three inter-related twelve-note rows, the second appearing with the contrasting thematic material in the first movement and forming the entire basis of the slow movement. The third row, used for the last movement, eventually gives way to the others at the end of the ‘work when the earlier material finds its ultimate resolution. ‘Buxton Orr DURATION ABOUT 16 MINUTES The solo Trumpet part is inserted into the piano score.
