: Axial skeleton
: Appendicular skeleton.
: Joints
: Muscles
Broad Objective: The topic will equip student with knowledge on the general anatomy of bones
and muscles and how they coordinate to perform specific function in human body.
Specific Objectives: By the end of this topic, the student should be able to:
Introduction to bones: List functions of bones, highlight types and examples of bones,
describe general structure of compact and spongy bones, and bone formation process and also
bone healing process. Identify factors that delay bone healing process.
Axial skeleton: Identify bones of the skull, list functions of the sinus and fontanalles, outline
characteristics of typical vertebrae, and describe structure of the vertebral column. Explain
movement and functions of the vertebral column. Identify the bones forming the thoracic cage.
Appendicular skeleton: identify the bones forming the appendicular skeletal, state the
characteristics of bones forming the appendicular skeleton. Outline the difference in structure
between the male and the female pelvis.
Joints: state the characteristics of fibrous and cartilaginous joints, describe the structure and
functions of a typical synovial joint. List the types of synovial joint and outline the movement
possible at five points of synovial joints.
Muscles: identify the characteristics of skeletal muscles; relate the structure of skeletal fibres to
their contractile activity. Describe the nature of muscle tone and fatigue, differentiate between
three types of muscle and give examples. Identify functions of main muscles of the body.
Describe interaction between skeletal system and muscular system in body movement.
