Final Design

Figure 1: Foundation Excavation

As part of the design constraints and considerations, the construction of the proposed bridge and
walkway should cause not encroach onto the road or close any closures of the road. As part of the
existing facilities, a parking lane is provided on both sides of the road. These lanes can be
requisitioned for use during the construction phase. Figure 1 above is a visual rendering of a possible
construction scenario that might arise during the excavation of the foundations. The figure displays
that the parallel parking lane provides adequate space for the use and operation of backhoes,
excavators and other construction vehicles and equipment. A concrete or other safety barrier will be
provided to separate the construction activities from the traffic making use of Woolsack Drive.

The area designated for the proposed social area could be used a temporary storage area for
construction materials, as well as a possible parking space for the concrete mixer to pump concrete,
as displayed in Figure 2.

Figure 3 below displays the possible crane placement during the column, beam and slab
construction. This scenario makes use of a smaller 10m crane with a short jib. The foundations,
columns and beams will be cast in situ, with the respective rebar cages built on site, in the area
designated for the social area.

The slab will be cast off-site and will be placed on the frame by way of a crane. Precast concrete is a
viable option in this case as the bridge can be assembled section by section. Once constructed, a
concrete screed could be applied on top to give the desired finish.
