W hen you have a problem, getting help is a sign of
courage, not weakness or failure – Academy
Award winning actor Ben Affleck.
The actor made this statement after he recovered from
substance abuse years ago, giving a strong message to all
those who are addicted to some or the other vice or are
suffering from a mental health issue.
One of the major public health problems today is
depression. It set in long before the Covid-19 pandemic.
The pandemic and the resultant isolation only triggered it
further. Substance abuse on the other hand can be traced to
the last century.
While it is natural to feel sad or experience other negative
emotions at times, if it lingers consistently for a prolonged
period, then it spells trouble and calls for professional help.
Generally, it is advised that if such feelings continue for
two weeks, the person should seek professional help.
Unfortunately, we neglect our mental health the most.
Overcoming substance abuse essentially requires
professional help lest it manifests once again.
Realizing the bevy of harmful effects that drug and alcohol

T hroughout a lifetime, the one
aspect we seldom pay attention
to, is ourselves. Evidently, to
relish the fruits of a peaceful and
content life, it is undoubtedly vital to
emphasize on our health – both

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has
compelled us to acknowledge this need
and move physical and mental health
care to the top of our priority lists. The
unforeseen change in our daily
routine—work and personal—has had
a significant impact on our holistic
wellness.
Speaking particularly about mental and
emotional health, this sudden change
that included isolation and social
distancing, became a breeding ground
for acute and chronic mental illnesses.
Not to mention people’s heightened
inclination towards substances or other
distractions for stress relief.
With addiction and mental illness
being so complex, it requires expert
medical attention, and going through
rehabilitation is the only way out for
some. Rehabilitation centers across the
world have ceaselessly striven to
provide quality and comprehensive
care to help patients who have fallen to
addiction and mental illnesses.
One prominent name among such

Please brief our audience about
Nōmina Wellness, its values, and the
key aspects of its stronghold within
the healthcare space.
We are one of the few treatment
facilities that specialize in mental
health related disorders, not just
addictions treatment. We wanted to
create a transformative space offering
specialized care for the holistic
treatment of disorders, utilizing healing
centered engagement (HCE), which is
a very community based, trauma
model.
One of the things that is most
important to us, is changing the way
society views and treats disorders, and
recognizing that addiction is one of the
many ways mental health distress
presents. We approach all mental
health disorders from a strength-based
lens, which can tend to be less
pathologizing. We strongly believe in
the resilience and inherent capacity our
clients have, to overcome any
adversity. We want people to feel
empowered to learn from this, and to
share their journey.
Our smaller and more intimate setting
provides a level of customization not
found elsewhere which has helped to
make us the foremost leader in the
treatment of complex mental health
issues from an in-patient setting. We
always wanted to ensure supports were
accessible, for the varying needs of our
clients, to help them thrive. So, we set
up a structure to support people across
a spectrum of care, from in-patient to
second stage, through to individual
counselling.
Tell us more about the services
offered by Nōmina Wellness which
make it stand out from the
competition?
Our program has been designed off of
the STAMP model (more info below),
a positive approach to health, which
reinforces a human’s evolutionary
hardwiring to be well. Unlike
traditional treatment models, which
seek to identify a specific problem, we
strive to treat the whole person, and
supporting change within their
collective. We want to understand what
are the adaptive behaviours a person
has developed to respond to their
adversity, work on changing those,
helping the person and their families
understand why they were developed
to begin with. It was really important
for us to others find their strength,
reconnect with families, and reclaim
their lives.
The benefits of a collaborative team
approach not found elsewhere can also
be seen in programs such as our
chronic pain program, where clients
have seen results not thought possible
in traditional healing models. Our
integration leading evidence-based
modalities such as Intensive Short-
Term Dynamic Psychotherapy
(ISTDP), Direct Neurofeedback (DNF)
have really provided us some
impressive results and more
sustainable changes. We often work
with the most complex clients, who
need this type of deeper engagement.
We are also able to draw from other

evidence-based therapies such as

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT),
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT),
Eye Movement Desensitization and
Reprocessing (EMDR) in addition to
other somatic based approaches.
Because our staff is so well trained, we
are able to draw from and integrate
these into a level of customization in
treatment planning. We wrap around
this work with robust psychoeducation
to help clients understand the how and
why of their adaptive responses,
increasing their level of awareness into
their process, and providing them tools
to share their strength and knowledge.
However, our greatest advantage
comes from the strategic location of
Nōmina. The site was chosen for it’s
beautiful vistas and its healing beauty.
It was a prime location to maximize
some of the pioneering work we do
with Nōmina’s adventure and nature-
based therapies. We have taken years
of research on transformation change,
nature, and healing to combine it into

community members. Once we had a
better understanding of the impacts of
COVID-19 and the safest protocols to
follow, we were able to slowly reopen
our inpatient facility, which has been
steadily growing. We continue to face
challenges, but as we try to teach our
clients, growth is painful, and it is
about navigating these with
compassion.
Lisa, please brief us on your journey
in the healthcare industry. Tell us
about how you came to be in this
profession.
Mental health has always been a
passion. Growing up in a family deeply
affected by mental health issues on
every level, demonstrated the distinct
need for better treatment options. This
helped in forming the vision for
Nōmina almost 20 years ago while I
was working as a hairdresser in
Hamilton, ON. This is where I first
developed an appreciation for the
transformative power of connecting
with people. I wanted to support
change from within, not just externally.
I had a vision for an in-patient
treatment facility that could provide
that healing space.
During this time in my life, I also
joined the military, so I gained another
different perspective on change, and
human connection. I was able to see
transformations happen on so many
different levels, and witness the
remarkable power of human resilience,
and growth. It inspirited me to learn
more.
What followed was decades of
education, experience, and hard work
in various organizations as both a
student, a volunteer, an educator, and
soldier. I took on as many
opportunities I could to gain as much
knowledge and experience as possible.
The vision truly came to fruition upon STAMP model definition
meeting my two business partners,

The two foremost elements of this
STAMP model, are Safety and Team

global threat. We understand people’s
need for connection and integrally their
need for safety, impacts how they feel
and how they cope.
Coupling that with a lack of aim and or
purpose and disrupted meaning, we
acknowledge people struggle to
actualize wellness. Interesting,
COVID-19 has uniquely provided
different opportunities for play, yet has
challenged our problem-solving
capacity beyond what we, as a species,
thought we could handle. We have seen
the depth of the human spirit, as we see
that every day in our work and know
that humans are capable of navigating
this stress.
In your opinion, what could be the
future of the rehabilitation services
niche post the pandemic?
I believe we will continue to see a rise
in people seeking mental health
support. We have seen the devastating
rise in mental health concerns. The
pandemic has brought about people’s
desire to connect with each other and
with nature; two things that are integral
to our program. Through the pandemic,
people have been getting out more and
more, seeking homes with yard space,
growing food, being more active, while
trying to find ways to be in harmony
with our collective. In many ways, our
program simply honours this natural
gravitational pull, and helps humans
normalize their responses to stress so
they can harness their power of their
process, using it to optimize outcomes.
The vast majority of our clients coming
in present with complex presentation
rooted in either physical, mental, or
emotional pain. Our niche in all of this
really comes from meeting people
where they are at and having a
diversity of resources to offer those
with more complex needs. We have
been able to see our model at work
provide unparalleled transformations
not found in the traditional medical
community. We feel this is the next
evolution of mental health and
addictions treatment.
As an established leader, what would
be your advice to the budding
entrepreneurs and enthusiasts
aspiring to venture into the
rehabilitation services sector?
Some of the hardest work you could
possibly do, and yet the most
rewarding. This work is not for the
faint of heart, yet provides such a
unique space to work alongside the
remarkable humans we do. Not just our
clients, but our staff to. None of this
would be possible without the amazing
team who come together every day
giving themselves to provide the
richness of the experience to others.
Much like the stamp model suggests,
this level of healing is not possible
without the strength of the team.
Surround yourself with fiercely
passionate people, who care about
treatment as much as you do, because
mental health is not a spectator sport.
Lastly, be prepared for endless days,
long nights, and lots of
disappointment. The hardships remind
us every day of the importance of the
work we do.
How do you envision scaling Nōmina
Wellness and its operations in 2021?
Continuing to develop excellence in
our program portfolio and remaining
open to possibilities. We recognize this
quality of care is desperately needed
globally. We hope one day to reach a
point where we can expand this, and
have it be more accessible elsewhere!
However, we are truly the embodiment
of a local grown family practice, which
is why the families are at the heart of
what we do. We are a Nōmina family,
who want to help. We hope to be able
to expand our level of care to other
places. But for now, we want to ensure
we stay close, and do what we can to
help our own community with our
scholarship opportunities.

A holistic approach to recovery

The contribution of rehabilitation centers has been
tremendous for those in need. “However, determining the

Driving excellence from experiences

What is life but a series of experiences? These experiences
make us stronger; they develop our character even though
we don't realize it sometimes. KC Gooding experienced the
same emotions during his journey of recovering from an
addiction.

“I struggled with addiction my entire life which came at a

significant cost to me and the emotional security of my
family,” shared KC, “We tried multiple approaches to
support my illness including treatment programs, private
practice professionals, and 12 step programs. I had reached
the age of 34 with little to no success when my parents
provided one more opportunity to change.”

Acknowledging the significance of the illness and diligence

to make it work this time, KC accepted help on 11-29-12.
“And I have been sober, ever since,” KC explains, “it was
challenging, to say the least, a lot of internal work was

done for myself and my family.” These experiences and
learnings from his journey helped KC in helping others

suffering from the disease of addiction.
For the last 5 years, KC has been working in the field of
behavioral healthcare, currently serving as the National
Director of Business Development at New Method
Wellness where he receives the privilege of supporting
individuals and families every single day. His work and
cordial approach at the rehabilitation center and in the field
of behavioral healthcare further got him an opportunity to
volunteer advocacy efforts as the President of the California
Alliance for State Advocacy (CASA) while actively
participating as a member of the National Association of
Addiction Treatment Providers (NAATP).
A pandemic of mental health
Covid-19 has had a devastating effect across the globe.
Both the physical as well as behavioral healthcare industry
saw a surge of cases during the pandemic. The fear of the
unknown and being confined within four walls living alone
and away from friends and family led to a rise in
alcoholism and drug addiction in addition to a wide variety
of mental health-related issues.
However, the rise has not necessarily meant that treatment
programs are stretched to capacity many providers have
struggled to stay open with a lack of patients seeking care
during the pandemic. Many potential patients have opted to
select providers closer to their locality, experiencing fear of
infection due to travel.
Other challenges have included ensuring the safety of
patients in care from the virus which has caused issues with
admissions and operations at behavioral healthcare
facilities. The quality of care has also been compromised in
some facilities because of safety concerns or protocols.
There is a wide variety of challenges that providers have
had to navigate during the covid-19 pandemic.
KC shares his opinion about the effects of COVID-19 on
the behavioral healthcare industry. “In my opinion, the need
for quality behavioral healthcare programs is going to be
vital to the overall health and wellness of our communities
locally and nationally,” he says, “I believe there will be a
need for specialized programs treating specific
demographics and treating specific mental health and
substance abuse disorders. Recovery is not a one size fits all
model and our behavioral healthcare facilities cannot be

either. We will need a variety of specialty programs to meet
the overwhelming needs of the population.”
Authentic mantra for aspirants
As a professional with over five years working in
behavioral healthcare and direct knowledge of many of the
industry's highest quality facilities, KC shares an insider's
secret for the aspiring entrepreneurs wishing to enter
behavioral healthcare.
“I will let you know one thing that behavioral healthcare
facilities all have in common,” he says, “they are owned
and operated by someone with a passion for the work they
do, usually someone with relative experience in recovery.”
KC also highlights the hard work all these entrepreneurs
had put in to get to the higher points of their careers. A lot
of blood, sweat, and tears go into this work. Moreover, it's
the authenticity and a genuine concern for those you
support are other characteristics leaders in the behavioral
healthcare industry have in common.
“They do not enter this field for the profits they intend to
make,” explains KC “although those that possess these
qualities often do well for themselves, they enter this field
because it is their life's purpose being fulfilled by the
support they offer others.”
Maximizing efficiency for consistent care

What is your opinion on the impact
of the current pandemic on the
global healthcare sector, and what
were the challenges you came across
during the initial phase of the
pandemic?
Whether or not someone had substance
abuse issues or mental health disorders
before the pandemic, we feel nobody
has been immune to the mental and
emotional impact ‘social distancing’
and isolation has created. Everyone
was fearful, confused, isolated, and
unsure what tomorrow would look like.
It’s been chaos in every sense of the
word.
As a healthcare provider, health and
safety is our primary focus. We were
prepared, as our CEO Dave is an
expert in Infection Control, and
immediately implemented prophylactic
and preventative measures to ensure
client and staff safety. We had an
abundance of PPE and even donated to
the local hospitals, police departments,
and fire departments to aid in frontline
protection.
As for our clients, we limited their
interactions, regimented their
schedules, kept them on-site only, and
maintained providing all services in
socially distant settings. Every hour,
temperatures were taken, disinfectants
were being utilized q15, masks and
gloves were worn at all times, and our
medical staff was doing rounds every
qh.
Our team came together, facing their
personal fears while caring for others.
The staff, from top to bottom, were
nothing short of heroic.
In your opinion, what could be the
future of the rehabilitation services
post the pandemic?

The pandemic has taught us a lot. We
implemented our telehealth services for
a multitude of services, and we’ve
continued to offer outpatient services
weekly at no charge to our clients. We
are able to reach a lot of people who
needed support, community, and
guidance as a result of isolation,
lockdowns, and the inability to receive
any in-person care.
As we continue to evolve as the needs
change, we believe biotechnology and
virtual treatment will expand. We still
believe that in-person care is essential
for the first ninety+ days of treatment,
virtual care is a great option thereafter.
And in using biotechnology, patients
are able to track their physiological
changes with a tangible result.
As an established leader, what would
be your advice to the budding
entrepreneurs and enthusiasts
aspiring to venture into the
rehabilitation services sector?
This is not an easy industry. However,
if you do it for the right reasons,
success will find you. The most
beautiful thing in this world is
changing someone’s life in the most
positive way, and then watching all the
lives touched by that one person.
How do you envision scaling your
company’s operations in 2021?
We will continue to pivot and adjust to
the times and problems at hand.
Whatever obstacles we face, we have
the team to overcome them.

Dr. Reuben Vaisman-Tzachor
obtained his doctorate in clinical
psychology from the California
School of Professional Psychology in
Los Angeles. He is a Fellow at the
American College of Forensic
Examiners Institute in Clinical and
Forensic Psychology, a Diplomate of
the American Board of Psychology
Specialties, a Fellow at the American
Psychotherapy Association, and he is
certified in Homeland Security
Specialty at Level-3 (CHS-III).
He is an adjunct professor of clinical
and forensic psychology at The
Chicago School of Professional
Psychology in Los Angeles, and an
adjunct professor at Antioch
University in Culver City, California.
He is a former adjunct professor of

Dr. Vaisman is the owner and
director of the Counseling Center of
Santa Monica – A Psychological
Corporation based in Santa Monica,
California and he is also an attending
psychologist and psychology proctor
at Cedars Sinai Medical Center
Department of Psychiatry in Los
Angeles, California.
He has conducted research and
published numerous articles on the
psychology of terrorists and
terrorism prevention and lead a
research project for the development
of a national terrorism prevention
strategy at Sandia National
Laboratories in Albuquerque, New
Mexico. He presented his proposal
for a national terrorism prevention
strategy to the George W. Bush
administration and his work was
subsequently adopted into the official
curriculum of the US FBI Academy.
His book “The Book of Terrorism”
was published by Cambridge Brick
House in Boston, MA in 2012.
Dr. Vaisman initiated the study of
previously uncharted domain of
psychological assessments for
immigration courts and published
seminal articles on psychological
evaluations for federal immigration
courts.
His work has been widely accepted
as the measurement standard for such
evaluations and his expert opinions
have been well received in federal
courts and in federal appellate courts.
His other areas of research-based
knowledge and service-delivery
expertise include drug and alcohol
addiction rehabilitation; human-
animal interactions; the psychology
of aging; chronic mental illness, and
multicultural psychology.
Dr. Vaisman was born in Israel and
served in the Israeli military as a
Navy captain, a weapons systems
officer, and as a gunship
commanding officer. He has had
extensive anti-terrorism warfare
experience and direct involvement in
many combat military operations
against terrorists in the Middle East.
He later served as a supervisor in the
Israeli government terrorism
prevention agency based in the
Western United States. In his role as
a supervisor he authored, field-tested,
and implemented numerous terrorism
prevention protocols for various
theaters in the region.
