MARY KOM

Chungneijang Mary Kom Hmangte (1 March 1983), popularly known as Mary kom is one
of the most fascinating and most successful Indian sports icon who made her way to the
Olympics with merely the power of her passion for the sport and remain in international
limelight as the undisputed Mistress of the Ring.

She never compromised with her keen interest in athletics inspit of belonging from humble
surroundings. She joined Sports Authority of India, Khuman Lampak in order to pursue her
dream of becoming a world class pugilist. Her strong determination and infrastructural support
from boxing association proves to be turning point for her.

She became the first World Women Boxing Championship, 2001 in US and later she become
the only boxer to won a World Amateur Boxing champion for a record six times. Looking over
her noted contribution in the field of boxing she was appointed as  national observers for boxing
in march 2017.

Along with great sports icon she is also leading animal rights activist who support PETA and
urge the education ministers of states and union territories across India to incorporate the
programme into official school curriculums.

In march 2020 she got the India's second highest civilian award, Padma Vibhushan. She is also a
recipient  of the Arjuna Award, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award and a special award from
the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA). During felicitation ceremony the

government of Manipur has also given her the post Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and
conferred on her the title "Meethoi Leima" which means great or exceptional.
