COMPOSITION WRITING :

What is a composition?
A composition is not simply a piece of writing. It must
be composed with simple organized ideas. It means
giving expression to one’s own personal ideas or
opinions up on a given theme or subject.
There are five types of composition :
1. Short Story Writing.
2. Narrative (First Person Account) Writing.
3. Descriptive Writing.
4. Debate Writing.
5. Picture composition.
Narrative Writing :
A composition on narrative writing consists mainly in
the narration of some event. A narrative composition
must not be confused with a short story or bits of
history. It should be treated as a subject for thought
and so it is more or less reflective.
Examples :
(a) Historical stories or legends
(b) Biographies
(c) Incidents(a festival, street events etc)
(d) An accident or Natural disaster(flood, a fire, a
ship wreck, an earthquake etc)
(e) A journey or a voyage
(f) A story (real or imaginary)

Descriptive Writing :
It consists description of some : -
(a) Place or thing
(b) Countries, towns, buildings
(c) Aspects of natural phenomena(monsoon,
volcanoes)

CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD COMPOSITION:


1. Unity :

A composition must be developing one theme with


a definite purpose. Nothing that is not relevant to it
should be admitted.
2. Order : The composition should follow a certain
ordered line of thought and come to a definite
conclusion
3. Brevity :
Composition should not be too long. The limit
should be 300 – 350 word

4. Style :
The style should be natural and familiar at the
same time dignified and literary. The language and
sentence construction should be simple, direct and
natural

5. The Personal Touch :


A composition should reveal the
personal feelings and opinions of the writer. It should
have his/her individuality in it. There should be a note
of sincerity in it
