Introduction:

According to a report of WHO, the road accidents are facing a growing trend and there will be an
80% increase in accidents from 2000 to 2020. Poor road infrastructure is one the leading reasons
for road accidents, which is a growing concern for developing countries such as ours. The
condition of our roads, highways, foot over bridges, road quality etc. are deteriorating every day
and in turn is leading to more deaths, disabilities and pollutions.

Study Area:
The house building intersection located in Uttara is one of the busiest junctions in this side of the
city which commuters use every day. Around this intersection, there are two very busy shopping
malls, Uttara University, multiple banks and the junior section of Milestone school. There are also
two very narrow service roads beside the intersection for rickshaws.

Situational Analysis:
The road leading from airport to the house building intersection is a 3 way lane on either side.
Although majority of the commuters get on various public transports from this specific location,
there is no dedicated bus stop here. This leads to unaccounted bus stops and people get into the
moving bus at the risk of getting injured. This is one of the prime reasons for several accidents in
the past. There was a foot over bridge for safely crossing the road but it has been taken down for
the construction of Dhaka mass transit. Now, over thousands of pedestrians cross the road
without any zebra crossing which is especially risky for the kids at school. On top of all this, the
traffic police are very busy directing traffic and cannot pay proper attention to those crossing the
road. Recently, the construction for Dhaka elevated expressway has started at this point. The foot
paths have been broken down and there is digging in several places of the road for soil testing.
This adds to the ever increasing traffic congestions and accidents. Due the recent constructions,
the air quality in this area has dropped significantly. The increasing presence of dust particles are
creating health problems. The condition of the service roads beside the intersection is also very
poor as there are holes in different places.

Recommendations:
The Dhaka elevated expressway construction will go on for some time so the government must
take immediate actions to alleviate the situation. Firstly, zebra crossing must be painted in the
interjection for sage passage and the flyover should be made accessible as soon as possible. A
specific portion of the road should be designated as bus stops on either side so that people can
easily get on transports. The hole in the service roads must be filled and maintained properly. The
number of traffic police should be increased and they must remain vigilant at all times. Along all
these, we must creating awareness about road accidents which is the most important aspect for
reducing road accidents.
