Rationale:

I have chosen to do the first written task on the text “The Adventures of Huckleberry

Finn”, a part 3 text selection. This is a letter which Huck writes to Jim after years, when

he becomes a man. Huck was very excited to write this letter as they didn’t have a

conversation for years after they went to their own life and got separated.

I chose this text because the text was banned in some countries because of the words

and concepts which Mark Twain put in his book, which were the facts. He wrote this

book keeping all this content in mind and had introduced his character “Huck Finn” who

has always gone against the society and did not like its rules and regulations. This text

is now supported by many universities and are encouraging their students to read this.

“ We encourage our students to read this text not because of its name or the time during

which it was written. We as their professors and teachers and mentors want them to be

civilized. Civilized means considering everyone equally and know how people of those

days used to suffer. Not only that we also want them to know how much privileged they

are to be in today’s situation.” This was one of the university’s view on this text.

Mark Twain, as his character of Huck Finn, wanted to reduce or remove the

discrimination and other believes that people follow which are actually meaningless.

The main aspect which I personally like in this text is that even Huck is a white and
belongs to a society where discrimination is very much encouraged, he still goes

against it and fights for his dear friend and partner Jim.

Letter from South America

My life, after Jim went home, became miserable. I was sent to school and was

brought up like a man of this society which I never liked. After few years, I was sent to
Illinois town and was made the master of a few slaves. For the first time, I felt very bad

and hated myself for doing so. I tried my level best to be lenient to them. After a few

months, I could no more bear it and went back to the Widow to take rest from the job,

assisting the niggers and checking how they worked and so on.

On my way back, I was wondering how Jim will be by this time. He would have

been very happy with his wife and his child. The child might have grown up to a boy.

With the same accent of Jim( laughing inside). The journey I’ve done with him,

unforgettable.

Finally when I reached, the Widow and Miss Watson felt very happy to see me as

a grown up man, serving this society. We had a long talk and then had our dinner. They

were impressed with my behaviour and felt very happy for me. And then I was moving

to my room. I rushed in searching for the box in which I used chuck all my personal

stuff. As soon as I opened it, I found the letter which Jim received from his lady when he

was with me and started reading it. I was smiling and slowly I recognise tears dripping

down from my eyes. Then started writing a letter to Jim. All these days I didn’t write was

because I don’t have the address and now also I’m not confirmed that this would be the

correct address.

“ Hi Jim, this is Huck Finn. I’m now a man who is serving the society. Sounds

weird right? But fate had taken me to situations where I am considered as the master of
15 slaves. I am trying my level best to look for their comforts. And now, I came home to

meet Widow Douglas and Miss Watson and take a break from that job.

I am not able to survive without a friend like you Jim. Remember the adventures

we have down the mississippi. I escaped from Widow and my Pap and faked my own

death? But then afterwards the sadness of my Pap’s death. Can’t forget those Jim.

Such scariest, happiest, adventure I can’t simply express in words. But I promise you

Jim, one day, you will feel proud of me when I try to stop slavery in some or the other

place and will spread all over the world.

Thank you Jim. For everything. Hope to see you in coming years again. Hope

you are safe and happy with your family. All the best for your and your son’s future.

Lovingly,

Huck Finn.”

I sent the letter the next day and was very eager to receive the reply from my

letter. That afternoon, I have been to a market area to get food items for our dinner and

found something fishy. Found a newspaper in which they have published a photo of a

slave hung in the public. I felt so apprehensive and was very tensed about Jim. “ This

shouldn’t happen to Jim. He should be safe and happy”said I to myself.

I was very tensed as I didn’t receive any reply for 1 week. The very next day, I

did receive one from Jim’s address. The letter says:

“ Hi Huck Finn, I’m Jim’s son. My dad used to tell about you. He used to feel very

happy whenever he used to talk about you. He fought taking you as an inspiration

against the rule which discriminates blacks. We all still remember you and thank you for

saving our father.

After receiving this letter, you may feel happy, but this is the truth. Jim is no

more. They have killed him for going against their rules and divided us and didn’t leave

us, children also. I thank god for your letter and we are waiting for you to save us from

this cruel society.

Waiting for you,

Joel.”

They need my help. I have to be there for them, as they still have faith that I will

be there to save them. So many lives are waiting for me and I will prove that I am there

for them. I will work for them and will go against the society forever. He conveyed this to

Widow Douglas and Miss Watson. They said,” we thought you are changed and now a

man of this society”. “ Being civilized is not only being a literate, but also treating

everyone equally” say I. They were very proud of me and accepted my proposal.

From then, each and every moment, I sacrificed for the upliftment of blacks and

also established a foundation under the name o f Jim which works for the upliftment of
the blacks. And lifted the rule which says “ blacks are slaves and whites are their

masters”.
