For your summer assignment, you will need to read the book Animal Farm and look for

similarities
between the book and the transformed government of old Russia. Animal Farm is a short, very
popular book written by George Orwell. Several copies can be found at local libraries. I would also
check with other students who may already own the book, or of course, purchase it.
Animal Farm: Comparison of characters to the Russian Revolution

Because George Orwell’s Animal Farm is a satire of the Russian Revolution, the characters of the
book draw similarities to the individuals of the Revolution in the 1910’s. Use the internet to become
more informed on the Russian Revolution and then do your best and attempt to match the characters
with the actual person/idea that they represent.

Animal Farm Russian Revolution

1. Mr. Jones A. KGB-Secret Police

2. Old Major B. Czar Nicholas II

3. Animalism C. Leon Trotsky

4. Snowball D. Karl Marx

5. Napoleon E. Communism

6. The Dogs F. Propaganda dept. of the comm.gov’t

7. Squealer G. Joseph Stalin

On the line, put the letter from the Russian Revolution group that best matches/represents
the Animal Farm character. Then, list 1 or 2 reasons why you feel they are similar.
