A. Introduction
1. Short Description
In this chapter 4 module 5 entitle “English for Practical Use, will provide you a
learning material about News Item text. This module will present the materials to
improve your knowledge about News Item text itself, the structure and language
features, and at the end, is how to make a simple and effective News Item text.
This text or News Item text can be taught in classroom as a learning material that can
improve student’s knowledge. By the use of News Item text, students will be able to
identify articles or news that are happening in their daily life.

2. Relevance
Before you move to the content in this learning materials, please answer the
question!
1. Have you ever watched a television about news or read news from magazine or
newspaper?
2. Can you catch the point from the news presented there?
3. Have you ever made news to talk about phenomena around you to someone

3. Learing Guide
In order to understand this learning material clearly, please follow the
instruction below;
There are three activity that used in this learning material to get your goal in
learning process namely pre-activity, main-activity, and post-activity.
a. In pre-activity, we can ask some question relate to News Item text to gain the
basic knowledge of the student. The basic knowledge in building the concept of

b. Main Activity. There are lot of activities that you can do in order to check your

Landslide in Bukittinggi
Two people died while four others were wounded in a landslide at a yard behind a
house near Teleng market in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra on Tuesday.
Killed were 3-year-old Yusuf, who was the son of a kiosk owner at the market, Bujang,
and 22-year-old Meli, who was a visitor to the market. The injured were rushed to the
Achmad Muchtar and Yarsi hospitals.
Bukittinggi Deputy Mayor Ismet Amziz said Tuesday it was suspected that recent heavy
rainfall had caused the landslide.

News Item text consist of the following structure;
- Main event/ newsworthy event: it recounts the event in a form of summary.
- Elaboration/background event: they elaborate what happened, to whom, in
what circumstance.
- Resource of information: it contains comment by its participant in, witnesses
to and authority expert on the event.

c. Social function/Language function of News Item text.
News Item text is kinds of text that used to inform the reader, listener or viewers
about the event in chronological system. The social function of News Item text is to
inform the reader, listener or viewer that the event is newsworthy or important to be
known.

d. Language Features of News Item


- Tense.
Tense used in News Item text is Past Tense in explaining news events. But,
when the event is still happens until now or still in the form of fact, it can
use simple present tense.
- Use action verb. Action verb is a verb that describe what someone does. For
example: go, see, run, etc
- Use saying verb. this kind of verbs are usually used to report what someone
said. For example; he asked me to come or she said that it went over my
house (indirect speech).
- Use passive voice. Passive voice is a subject that does not perform the action
of the verb. for example; the thief was beaten by the policeman.
- The use of adverb.

e. Characteristics of News Item text.


- Title
Most of News Item use recount genre. To know the content of the news, you
need to carefully pay attention to the title of the news. This will show you
the core what will be happened. The title will represent the sequence of the
event. The title may be a sentence or a noun phrase.
- Opening
It contains place, time, purpose or reason, and the main problem.
- Content
The content of news must be facts, including informans opinion based on the
event. There also the use of reported speech to refer the informant’s
statement, opinion, or critics is needed.

Town Contaminated
Moscow – A Russian journalist has uncovered evidence of another Soviet nuclear
catastrophe, which killed 10 sailors and contaminated an entire town.
Yelena Vazrshavskya is the first journalist to speak to people who witnessed the
explosion of a nuclear submarine at the naval base of shkotovo – 22 near Vladivostock.
The accident, which occurred 13 months before the Chernobyl disaster, spread
radioactive fall-out over the base and nearby town, but was covered up by officials of
the Soviet Union. Residents were told the explosion in the reactor of the Victor-class
submarine during a refit had been a ‘thermal’ and not a nuclear explosion. And those
involved in the cleaned-up operation to remove more than 600 tones of contaminated
material were sworn to secrecy.
A board of investigators was later to describe it as the worst accident in the history of
the Soviet Navy

Yogyakarta (JP)- National flag carrier Garuda Indonesia has temporarily diverted its
flights intended for Adisucipto Airport in Yogyakarta to Adisumarmo Airport in
Surakarta, Central Java, after one of its planes overshot an Adisucipto runway lane on
Wednesday night.
“All of Garuda Indonesia flights heading toward Yogyakarta, for a total of 34 flights,
now will [be diverted] to Surakarta,” Garuda Indonesia VP of corporate

The flights include 10 coming from and going to Jakarta, three to and from Denpasar,

Garuda Indonesia is still evacuating the Boeing 737-800 NG, which slipped on the
runway and overshot a lane on Wednesday night. It carried 123 passengers, none of
whom were harmed.

JAKARTA, Indonesia — B. J. Habibie, who as president of Indonesia


ushered in an era of democracy that ended the brutal and corrupt rule of
Suharto, whose 32-year dictatorship was one of the most brutal and corrupt
of the 20th century, died on Wednesday at a hospital in Jakarta. He was 83.
His son Thareq Kemal Habibie said the cause was heart failure.
“Please allow me on behalf the Indonesian people, and the government, to
convey our deep sorrow,” Indonesia’s president, Joko Widodo, said. “We
know Mr. Habibie as a world-class scientist, the father of technology in
Indonesia and the third president of the Republic of Indonesia.”
Mr. Habibie was working for the aerospace manufacturer Messerschmitt-
Bölkow-Blohm in Germany in 1974 when Suharto persuaded him to return to
Indonesia and develop the country’s technology.
He held several posts before Suharto named him to his cabinet as minister of
research and technology in 1978. Twenty years later, he appointed him vice
president and his successor.

A survey has found about 13 percent of first-time smokers in the country are
junior high school students. It also revealed 89 percent of young female employees
were smokers.
The survey was conducted in five major cities across the country, including
Surakarta in Central Java.
Muhammad Syahril Mansyur, the Surakarta Health Agency’s respiratory illness
division, said that the finding of the survey showed an alarming growth rate of
Indonesian smokers. "This situation is a cause for concern,” he said. “It appears the
country’s younger generation is uneducated about the health risks of smoking.”
The Indonesian anti-tobacco campaign has reportedly been deemed as ineffective as
the government refuses to sign the international convention on tobacco control. It
said that cigarette producers contributed to a large amount to state revenue and gave
jobs to thousands of workers
