Criterion A
The candidate shows a satisfactory understanding of the concept of globalization and of relevant business
management tools, theories and techniques (in this case: various aspects of human resource
management, such as motivation, recruitment and training). The candidate does not show much
understanding of the concept of change.

Criterion B
The candidate applies the business management content well to her chosen organization (Starbucks),
providing examples of human resource management practices in the company. However, the concepts of
globalization and change are only implicitly applied in some parts of the answer (for example, the idea that
the long chain of command is due to Starbucks having evolved from a local coffee shop to a world-wide,
geographically disperse operation is not developed).

Criterion C
Some relevant arguments are made about the ways in which Starbucks human resource management
strategies have developed. However, the justifications remain rather limited (for example, what is the
evidence for CSR programs to be the main motivation for Starbucks employees?). The points made by the
candidate tend to be descriptive rather than analytical, with many generalizations. This is the main
weakness of the answer overall.

Criterion D
All the structural elements are present, and most ideas are clearly organized.

Criterion E
The candidate addresses management and employees’ perspectives on Starbucks HR policies. However,
without using the concepts of change and globalization, these perspectives are not fully developed.
