SMELTING Cu from its ore in lab Class: Name:

MALACHITE is a green rock that is found mainly in West Africa. It

is a natural form of copper carbonate. Most of our copper metal
comes from malachite, and this is what you are going to do.

When the malachite rocks have been quarried, they are crushed to
a fine powder. The green powder you have got is crushed
malachite.

Put some malachite in a boiling tube. Grip the boiling tube with the
metal holder and gently heat it in the bunsen flame.
HAZARD – YOU MUST WEAR GOGGLES.

As you heat the green powder it starts to _________________ and

a ________________ is given off. The powder turns from green to

__________________.

When the powder has completely changed colour, put the boiling
tube in a test-tube rack and let it cool down for a little while.

Using a pipette, carefully half-fill the boiling tube with sulphuric

acid. HAZARD – YOU MUST WEAR GOGGLES.

Gently swirl the acid and powder round in the boiling tube. A
chemical reaction takes place and the liquid turns a

_____________ colour.

Put the boiling tube back into the rack. Carefully put a shiny iron
nail into the tube.

After a while the nail is coated with a ________________coloured

Layer. This is _____________________ metal.
