Metals from the Earth

I am Charles Martin Hall from the USA

And I am the Frenchman Paul Heroult

We discovered how to extract aluminium
from bauxite independently

are needed to see this picture. That’s not the only strange co-
incidence

We were born and died in the same

year too…spooky or what?

Find out about how to get your metal from the Earth and produce an educational podcast (it can be TV
show, historical movie, song, script, radio show, animation…anything you can find on iTunes) to
interest and educate young chemistry students about getting metals out of the Earth.

You will have to present this piece of work to the class. You have two weeks to prepare your podcast as homework.
You may work in groups of a maximum of 3 students (but individual and pair work is also acceptable). Your final piece
should be 5 minutes maximum.

Grade Content Presentation

E States how to extract the metal and the No effort made to make work neat or presentable
conditions needed

D Explains why the process was/is important Work is neat but information is difficult to
to find or unclear

C Uses chemical ideas (e.g. reactivity, electrolysis, Work is neat and information is presented well
redox) to justify the reaction and conditions used

B 6-8 + models the reaction Grade 8 + creative presentation but a bit dull

A 6-9 + uses own words confidently Grade 8 + creative presentation that engages the
class
