What do they do? Near the South Pole, three thousand people live together in a place called Amundsen- Scott Station. This is one of the driest and coldest places in the world. The station has libraries, cinemas, shops, Sports rooms, canteens and laboratories. There is electricity, and they have telephones and computers. But the people here don't travel by car, or train, or bus, because there aren't any roads or railways near the station. Then how do the people move from one place to another? They travel by ship, helicopter, plane or snow tractor, or with carts pulled by dogs. ‘There aren't any trees or flowers there, but there are hundreds of different birds and other animals. In the summer we go swimming in hot pools of water. There are a lot of volcanoes near here, and the volcanoes heat the water for us.
