BIODIVERSITY AND THE HEALTH SOCIETY

NAME ;PADMA YERVA KASI LAKSHMI DATE ; 6-07-2021

COURSE/SECTION ; BS BIO 1-1 STUDENT NO. 20-2-01469

1. Given the invasive species in the Philippines, indicate their effects on biodiversity.

Invasive species Specific Effect on Biodiversity

1. Makahiya When dry thickets of M. .Pudica may be fire hazard and are said to prevent
the regeneration of other species [ PIER, 2017] . In meadows ,it is reported
to kill out all other plants “ [ Fairchild,1902]. The impact of Thisplant on
biodiversity appears to be as yet rather limited. In the c
Comoros however the species is viewed as being a real threat to the native
flora [ Ibrahim ,2003]. A Study by wangetal .
2. Golden snail This large snail [ up to 80-mm shell height] has invaded large parts of south
east Asia during recent decades .A Field experiment demonstrated that
grazing by the snail can cause the loss of aquatic plants, a change toward
dominance of planktonic algae, and there by a shift toward turbid water.
3. Tilapia The release of Nile tilapia into non- native aquatic ecosystems may result in
competition for food and space, thereby damaging native species .The wide
environmental tolerance and high reproductive rate of Nile tilapia facilitate its
use for aquaculture , but also render the species highly invasive.
4. Janitor fish The janitor fish are considered as a serious threat to the lakes biodiversity
as they compete with other native fish for food ,preyon smaller fishes and
feed on eggs while reproducing faster than any other species.
5. Ipil-ipil The main uses of IPIL-IPIL are as a hedge , bush, tree, or coppice .
However it can also be used to feed grazing or herding animals .The IPIL-
IPIL leaves can be dried for use in concentrate feeds . IPIL-IPIL is also
known for its high nutritional value and for the similarity of its chemical
composition wit that of the alfalfa.

2. Choose one considered protected area in the Philippines and create a digital campaign pamphlet on
how it could be protected. Your work must include detailed information about it
(image/location/topography, when it was established as a protected area) on-going or possible threats,
and details on what can be done to save and protect it.
How many protected areas are there in the Philippines?
240 protected areas
As of 2013, there are 240 protected areas in the Philippines covering a total area of 54,500 square
kilometers(21,000 sq mi) – 14.2% of the Philippines' total area.
...
Protected landscape and seascapes.

Name Murcielagos Island

Area 151.00 ha (373.1 acres)

Established 2000

Zamboanga del Norte

Location
Listed in Section 3 of the NIPAS Act are the following categories of protected areas: (1)strict nature
reserve, (2)natural park, (3)natural monument, (4)wildlife sanctuary, (5)protected landscapes and
seascapes, (6)resource reserve, (7) natural biotic areas, (8) and other categories established by law,
conventions .

3. The title of this activity is “At-Risk Population." Make an info magazine about The Philippines’
Biodiversity. Choose ten species (any flora and fauna). Include pictures of species, identify the location,
and state the present status or condition (endangered, vulnerable, endemic, etc.) of the species
involved…

RISK POPULATION;

1.ENDANGERED SPECIES TIGER; ;(2008) found evidence of tiger (Panthera tigris) range contraction
in the Philippines. Their study indicates that tigers were once widespread across the Sunda shelf,
the continental shelf that connected peninsular Malaysia, the Philippines, and part of Indonesia to
Asia.
2,ENDANGERED SPECIES TURTLE; Threats. The Philippine forest turtle is an enigmatic
freshwater turtle species, it exerts great fascination for turtle hobbyists. Due to the previous inability
to locate it in the wild, probable threats from habitat loss, and potential pressure from collectors,
this turtle is listed as critically endangered. The Philippines is home to 5 of the 7 sea turtle
species in the world: Green Turtle, Hawksbill Turtle, Loggerhead Turtle, Leatherback Turtle and
Olive Ridley.

3. ENDANGERED SPECIES OWL; The latest list of threatened bird species ('Threatened Birds of the

World'), Birdlife International, 2000), reduced this further by downgrading the two
'Endangered' species, the Giant Scops Owl Mimizukugurneyi and the Philippine Eagle Owl Bubo
philippensis to 'Vulnerable' status, and the four 'Vulnerable' species.

4.ENDANGERED SPECIES BUFFALO; The Philippines' proposed national land animal, a dwarf buffalo
called tamaraw, could again roam wild across the country's Mindoro Island by 2050, according to an
ambitious conservation plan being developed by a team of local, national and international
conservationists, policymakers and indigenous peoples.

5. ENDANGERED SPECIES PANDA; Giant pandas are no longer endangered in the wild, but they are still
vulnerable with a population outside captivity of 1,800, Chinese officials have said after years of
conservation efforts.Conservation efforts have saved China's giant pandas from
the endangered species list. Conservation efforts in China have paid off. The country announced on
Wednesday that, after decades of work, the giant panda species is no longer endangered as more
than 1,800 of the animals now live in the wild.

6. ENDANGERED SPECIES CHIMPANZEE; It is endemic to the Philippine forests and woodlands, but

especially in the mangrove forests of western central Philippines— particularly in Palawan, the Visayas, and
Mindanao.Chimpanzees [are] in danger of extinction." Rampant deforestation, poaching, and capture
for the pet trade has decimated the wild chimpanzee population, which fell from a million animals at
the turn of the century to between 172,000 to 300,000 today, according to the Jane Goodall Institute.

7. ENDANGERED SPECIES PIGEON ;The Negros bleeding-heart pigeon (Gallicolumbakeayi) is

endemic to the Philippines where it is found on the islands of Negros and Panay. It is critically
endangered; continuing rates of forest loss on the two islands where it occurs suggest that it will
continue to decline.

8. ENDANGERED SPECIES CROCODILE; The Philippine crocodile is a critically endangered species

(IUCN 2000) and considered to be the most threatened crocodile species in the world. This endemic
freshwater crocodile, once thought to be extinct in Luzon, was recently rediscovered in the Northern
Sierra Madre, Northeast Luzon.

9.ENDANGERED SPECIES CHAMELONS; Green Crested Lizard Bronchocelacristatella This is

known as the "chameleon of the Philippines". The local name for it is hunyango. Like chameleons,
they change their color by opening and closing their cells called melanophores.

10. ENDANGERED SPECIES EAGLE ;Once inhabiting every island in the Philippines, the
Philippine eagle (Pithecophagajefferyi) – the world's longest eagle – now occupies a fraction of its
former range and is listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN. Habitat loss is the eagle's biggest
threat.
