The Commodity Trade Analysis Challenge, 2021

Please find the attached file in the mail for the HS Code of the Commodities Assigned.

1. Analyze the outlook of the commodity with respect to its global DEMAND and SUPPLY during the
current times and in the future. Find if India is a NET IMPORTER or a NET EXPORTER of the
commodity also analyze the past trend of import/export.

2. Find the Top 3 exporters (if India is a net importer)/importers (if India is a net exporter) of the
commodity assigned, e.g. if the commodity is Rice, then India is net Exporter. So, find the top 3
importing countries/regions of Rice from India and vice versa in case of India is a net Importer.
Analyze the import-export trend of those countries and why are they in such top positions.

3. Find out why does India has a COMPARATIVE ADVANTAGE/DISADVANTAGE of the commodity
with respect to the exporter/importer in sense of technology, government policy, climate, etc.

4. Device an EXPORT STRATEGY to make India the top exporter to the country which is currently
the second-largest importer for the given commodity. If India is a net importer, device a strategy
to reduce the NET COSTS incurred due to imports. You may use macroeconomic parameters like
Ease of Doing Business, Trade Barriers in the export/import country, RTAs, govt policies, etc.

5. Mention how the pandemic has affected the commodity and related sector from India’s
perspective as well as major importing/exporting countries.

1. Submit a maximum 7 slide presentation (excluding the intro and thank you slide)
2. Use Font Size: 11, Font Style: Arial for the submission
3. Naming convention: GroupNo_HSCode_Commodity

Things to note:

1. The HS code given in the list is at 4-digit Level. For analysis, if you need it at 6-digit or more, you
need to register and login on Trade Map.

2. You may use the Trade Map for the analysis of the problem statement. You may use miscellaneous
data like trade agreements with different countries to substantiate your answers

3. Plagiarism will attract negative points

4. Out of Box Ideas for export strategy will attract brownie points

5. Analysis of the data is essential

6. All sources must be clearly mentioned
