It gently reaches across the ages in ancient illuminations and freely spills from the pens and brushes of countless poets and artists. Echoing through our sanctuaries in the melodies and texts of many beloved carols, i brings to life the beautiful visions of biblical prophets and the hope of early Christian pilgrims. Today, the rose remains a vital expression of love and peace both inside the Church and the outside world. Her appearance in the garden is a treasured harbinger of the coming spring's abundance. Asa gift, the rose's delicate beauty is usually reserved for the most mean- ingful expressions of the heart. No flower holds our dreams of love more beautifully than she, Icisin chat same spiricrhac the present work was conceived and written. [tis our sincerest prayer that as Christ, the Rose of Sharon, opens before you this Christmas, your spirit will be encouraged by the beauty of God's greatest gift. Let the words and music of this cancata remind you that even in the deepest winter, we are people of joy and life... children of the garden Joseph and Pamela Martin PERFORMANCE NOTES “To use the rose as a visual focal point, we recommend that you obtain 10 white, long- stemmed roses and one red, long-stemmed rose. Beginning with the opening song, “The ‘Winter Rose” (to which you may wish to have the choir process) and with each subsequent song through “The Winter Rose” Reprise, place a white rose in a large vase on the altar or communion table, You may either do this at the beginning or at the end of each song, For the song “Look to the Rose,” a red rose should be placed so that it occupies the front, center portion of the vase. You might even cut this rose slightly longer than the rest so that itis more prominent. No rose is used for the final number, “Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming,” For those congregations not wishing to reference che crucifixion during this cantata, the song “Look to the Rose” may be omitted, along with the narration for “The Winter Rose” Reprise. The final order in this instance would be “The Winter Rose” Reprise (without nar ration), followed by “Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming,” In this case, 11 white roses are used, one for every song For a quieter, more contemplative service, you might perform the cantata as written, but end after “Look to the Rose,” incorporating communion after that song, If so, you might omit “Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming” or you might even have the choir and congregation sing one verse in unison following communion. Please fel free to add to the suggestion given here, making “The Winter Rose” a work that suits the needs and tastes of your congregation.
