One of the American influences in our country is on our cuisine.

The emergence of

American junk food continues to be a trend in our country. Children and teens are loving the

high fat and salt content in a special treat from potato fries, specifically, those offered by

McDonald’s. Thanks to McDonald’s, American food was made familiar to us. It might even be

the first comfort food that we can think of. We loved these foods so much that we even adapted

some of their dishes into a Filipino-style dish. To name, we have adapted from the American

spaghetti our Filipino spaghetti, with chopped hotdogs, but with a sweeter sauce. Another

popular McDonald’s foods, fried chicken and hamburgers are also becoming part of our food

culture that they even ended up becoming standard street food. This just shows how McDonald’s

through its American food has influenced Filipinos. As such, the concept of this ‘fast-food

restaurant’ gave rise to the term “McDonaldization” as coined by the sociologist George Ritzer

which refers to the rationalization of production, work, and consumption, adapted from the

concept of a fast-food restaurant. In the Philippines, we can see the effects of McDonaldization

such as the drive-up windows, ATMs, and self-service gasoline.
