ft What's up with cicadas and Japan?
Cicadas are insects omnipresent in Japanese literature and are associated with
"the sound of summer". But, with over 3,000 varieties of cicadas found all around
the world, why does it seem like all of them live in Japan?

Cicadas spend most of their life-cycles under ground and come out to mate-this
varies between species anywhere from 2-17 years. But most Japanese species
come out between July-5eptember-the reason why they're so ubiquotous during
this time. Once they're out, adult cicadas only live for a few weeks, forcing them
to focus on adult pursuits - like cicada love-making. And what is the male
cicada's preferred method of booty-call? You guessed it... 5INGING(or deafening
cries for attention).

Japanese onomatopoeia includes over 14 words meant to phonetically imitate the

cry of cicadas, including: minmin, gingin, jiyajiya and many more. The most
common one—"minmin" is made by the "Minmin-zemi" and the one in this
chapter—'[/i/i" is made by the "Abura-zemi". "Abura" means "oil" and the sound
mimics boiling oil, which is how they get their name.

Imagine a significant portion of the human population crying loudly as a form of

mating call—ALL at the same time. (—A— i)
