For Sirens, the Deluge isn’t a single tidal wave of water that destroys all continents, it’s each and
every event that could potentially end the world as we know it. To this end, some Sirens look for
major events to cling to and try to manipulate, mainly for the sake of stopping the outcome that
would lead to the Deluge as they see it.
Sadly however, most Sirens do not have a unified take on what causes the Deluge or what
prevents it. For example, some Sirens view it as happening because of the fluctuation of power in
politics, specific party agendas leading in actions against or toward the Deluge. Or some Sirens
believe that Education, whether it’s abundance or absence, is one of the reasons for the Deluge
and seek to either stamp it out or help it flourish. No matter the case, some Sirens latch to
specific lines of events connected to concepts that flourish in the mortal world, and these Sirens
group together in what is called a “Chorus”.
Choruses serve as the “Z-Splat” for Sirens, and their purpose tends to be twofold. First, a Chorus
serves as both a support and activist group that care for a specific set of events or phenomena
that Currents do not cover themselves or are not dedicated fully towards. It should be noted that
“Support of” covers merely caring for the concept, and that Sirens within it can be for the
concept or against its existence. It’s common for a Chorus to arise from a Current, but it’s not a
requirement to belong to a Current in order to join a Chorus. Second, a Chorus holds the means
to allow a Siren to refine her powers and Akashic Record in a way she cannot do without a
Chorus. Membership in a Chorus can vary, its active members ebb and flow, from any Waters or
Currents.
Choruses have three tiers of benefits known as Arias. Instead of spending Pneuma on a Verse,
the benefits of an Aria are always available for the member of the Chorus, provided prerequisite
circumstances are in effect. Arias are known to last a lunar month or Cycle, roughly 28.5 or
rounded to 30 days. Consider the Siren’s membership in a Chorus like a subscription, only in
place of correspondence the Siren’s Arias are checked, diminished, or reactivated each Cycle.
Sirens are creatures of action. Action without purpose has little hope to forewarn and prevent an
oncoming Deluge. In the same fashion how many Arias the Siren gains from her Chorus depends
on how much effort she puts into the obligations of the Chorus. Working its field, meeting and
helping other Chorus members, and dedicating herself to specific causes is what increases he
boons from the Chorus. As niche as Choruses can be, they still have awareness of sister groups
in Siren society. The limited numbers that Surface also factors into Chorus population, as large
Choruses are often formed from members borrowed from other Choruses. This ever shifting
membership is not discouraged. Some Sirens find it advantageous to stay subscribed to the
causes that interest them, dedicating themselves to whatever issue needs the most attention as the
need arises.
Mechanics
Each Aria has its own category, a pattern common to all Choruses: The Passive Aria, the Active
Aria, and the Invested Aria. This is an increasing scale of how dedicated a Siren is to any of her
Choruses.
● The Passive Aria is always available to the Siren when she remains a member of that
Chorus. (As in meeting its prerequisites)
● A Siren can only receive the benefit of a single Active Aria each Cycle. When the Cycle
expires the Siren can freely renew the same Active Aria or if she is also a member of
another Chorus, switch to that Active Aria freely for a new Cycle. Changing an Active
Aria mid-Cycle, however, requires the minimum Invested cost of Pneuma.
● The Invested Aria is achieved by a Siren who has dedicated her all to the aims of her
Chorus. She must have the other two Arias of the Chorus active and pay up a steep price
of Pneuma into the Song itself. The benefits of the Invested Aria last the entire Cycle
before the Siren must again pay Pneuma to use them for another Cycle. Many Invested
Arias have modular effects for repeated Pneuma costs, the balance of which must be paid
before the Siren begins the Cycle.
Note that the tier of the Siren’s dedication (how many Arias she is empowered by) is not a
correlation of leadership in the Chorus. A true Chorus, in the theatrical sense of the term, is the
supporting cast in the background that works to meet the needs of the group. An individual
performer may take point (a Siren with an Invested Aria) in the narrative of the Chorus, her
fellow members rallying behind her, before she steps back into line (becoming Active or
Passive). Even if the Choruses aims are critical ones, most Sirens are instinctively aware the
dangers of staying too Invested to the cause. Sirens at that level of dedication to a Chorus have
undone themselves through their own efforts.
Strain
Sometimes, a Siren sees her Chorus as the only means to enact great change. A Siren seeking the
Invested Aria of her Chorus, but finding herself short of Pneuma costs has a deadly way of
meeting this deficit. By taking a level of resistant Lethal damage, she automatically expels her
own internal connection to the Song in the form of extra Lucidity points of Pneuma. This
Pneuma can only be used for paying the costs of an Invested Aria (including changing an Active
Aria mid-Cycle). Any excess Pneuma is lost.
As this damage is resistant to supernatural forms of healing, it's not unheard for a Siren to kill
herself in one final performance to enact a great change in the Song. At this point her fellow
Sirens in the Chorus are more than just members. They’re the first line of defense from having
one of their own kill herself for the cause.
Designing a Chorus
Beyond the example Choruses presented to you, Storytellers and players are encouraged to create
their own Choruses if it would better fit the needs of your Chronicle. To do so, follow a few
simple steps.
Prerequisites fall along various criteria. Some Choruses expect a Skill rating at three dots or
higher. Some expect a high rating of an Attribute or a Conclusion. Some may require all
members to know a certain Opus. Much more rarely, only Sirens of a certain Akashic Record are
allowed to join, such as Akashic Record three. Even less than obvious ratings might be required
for rather unorthodox Choruses.
Refrain from becoming too specific in the prerequisites for your Chorus. Remember, a Siren that
meets these prerequisites receives the Passive Aria for free. At most, requirements of two
different ratings and an Opus is as stringent of calibre a Chorus would need for new members.
Passive Arias provide a free benefit such as a few Merit dots used unusual ways or the effects of
a 1-2 dot Conclusion. Basic, simple but minimal, a taste of what’s to come.
Activate Arias provide more potent benefits. It may be one or two interconnected talents or
privileges or as if a 3-4 dot Conclusion. Some worthy output for the Siren’s input each Cycle.
Invested Arias are extreme, epic, vast and potentially game breaking. Some provide new
subsystems for the Siren to use or go beyond 5 dots of a theoretical matching Conclusion.
Invested Arias can be expanded or further tiered by their Pneuma costs each cycle, which must
be paid in however many sums by the start of the Cycle where the Siren receives the Aria.
Typical spreads of Pneuma costs are 15 per Investment (15/30/45) or even stronger Arias sport
20 Pneuma per Investment (20/40/60).
By finalizing the themes and aims of the Chorus you’ll also find parallels amongst the Waters
and Currents. This can help with populating any NPCs in the Chorus. The majority of Choruses
don’t restrict themselves to only have members of a certain Water or Current, although there may
be exceptions.

Throughout history, there have been many stories of people who have made deals with the
supernatural for various boons. Sometimes it's to extend lives, sometimes it's to make a simple
fortune, sometimes it's to win their beloved's heart. But in all cases, there's always a price, almost
always equal to the boon gained. The Sirens have taken note of these events, forging a Chorus
based on the simple support of the concept of equivalent exchange: gaining one thing and
something of equal value must be lost.
The Order of the Black Huntsmen are therefore happy to play the role as a mysterious benefactor
that treats their targets to whatever their hearts desire, until the day comes that they eventually
take something of equal value away. Sometimes it helps against the Deluge, but those within this
Chorus can sometimes care less and focus more on the present.
The Huntsmen and Requirements: The Huntsmen, or HuntressesHuntswomen, are usually made
up from the ranks of the Vaporia or Polaria Waters, given the former’s knowledge of choice and
consequence and the latter's knowledge that eventually everything must end. The Currents of
Buoyancy and Cocytus are also enamored with this Chorus, as the Winding Current is usually
good enough to carry out manipulations to grant boons and take them away, and Cocytus either
has things of great power to offer to potential "signatories" or are willing to dig up dirty secrets
to show the world of their target as their due.
In order to join the Order, the Siren must display her ability to manipulate others and get them
willing to sign for what they dream of. Their Persuasion Skill must be at 3 or above.
If the Siren cannot open the rest of the doors by the end of the Scene, she is free to use this
benefit on the target anytime afterwards. If the Siren tries to use this benefit upon a target with
less Doors remaining than her Persuasion, the Target is automatically lowered to one Door.
Like all bargains, there is a Catch: The Samiel may choose to ask the same number of boons
from the mortal, which can be repaid at any time the Samiel declares it should be repaid. The
same system of boons (small, medium and large) applies for the Samiel. How the boons are paid
can depend on the Siren, some Sirens grant the mortal boons first and then wait before calling in
their favors. Some wait for the mortal to grant them boons before they act on their part.
This agreement is binding, supernaturally so. If a Samiel or Mortal doesn’t pay up on the boons
they’re supposed to grant within the timeframe decided upon bargaining, then they suffer a
penalty that affects all rolls, including Breaking Point and Dissonance rolls, equal to the number
of unpaid boons they were supposed to grant. The penalty doesn’t apply if they’re trying to carry
out the boon. For the unpaid party, the penalty acts as a bonus instead towards all rolls to enforce
the bargain, which can also aid supernatural powers such as Traces to seek out the mortal or his
loved ones, or Verses to force cooperation.
Nothing can break this bargain, not even the depredations of the creatures of fate, agents of the
clockwork machine nor even mages of the lunargent thorn. Outside of repaying the bargain, there
is usually only one escape clause: Death. Death allows both parties to escape the penalties and
bonuses enforced by the bargain. Of course, if the subject tries becoming undead in some
manner, this usually doesn’t save them from the pissed off fish monster seeking to kill them for
good. They are known as the “Huntsmen” for a reason.
One of the major constants within human society is usually the factor that there will be those in
power, those at the top who rule over those below them, who can shape the world not with a
snippet of song but with the wave of cash and pulling strings. The ones who the rest of human
society look up to, whether out of admiration, envy or disdain. The ones up so high that it seems
like their individual sins don’t even matter compared to the common man.
The main concerns of the Sirens in this Chorus usually lie within politics, their leaders, their
workings, how people rise to power, how they use that power, or even wherever the power lies.
They seek to change politics, those in power, the system, what have you into an ideal form that
will, if not help against the deluge, then at least not cause any impact to further the Deluge from
happening. As they do, they’re often described as critics or comedians on politics, pointing out
the laughable flaws in the structures or pointing out the consequences of politicians actions.
The Critics and Requirements: The Critics are almost wholly made up of Sirens of Freshwater
and Vaporia. Freshwater is tied intimately to the structures of civilization and humanity, making
them an optimal fit for the self-governance that politics ultimately serves as. On the other hand,
Vaporia offers the views within and without politics, the curiosity that has them look through the
odd angle that shows the truth behind governmental actions. The Currents of Harmony and Lethe
are the most well known to enter this Chorus, the former to stop the Deluge through acts of
governance and the latter to shape the government to humanity’s common will...and the Flensers
should it fit them.
It should be noted that, despite recognizing a need for change in politics, the Sirens within this
Current all have differing ideas on what needs to be changed in politics to even begin to see
where to go. And as it should be obviously visible by now, this Current requires at least Politics
3 and above before a Siren can become a Critic.
If the Siren has the Invested Aria, she may designate entire cities if she so decided. Maintaining
this sway is an Investment of 15 Pneuma per city.
Drawback: If the Aspiration is failed, then everyone affected by the Aspiration takes the Shaken
Condition instead.
Drawback: Claiming authority within another organization may be noticed by the original
organization, and if the Critic’s original organization takes notice of her making noticeable or
news worthy actions, they may take it as a sign of betrayal. Besides, the organization the Critic
claims authority in might not take kindly to someone outside meddling in their affairs. If the
Critic abuses her authority or becomes under notice of her original organization (without prior
notice) or the one she moved to, the Critic takes the Notoriety Condition [GMC 183].
There’s just something about the nature of love that compels people to break their boundaries, to
change their very nature for the one they love and that not even distance can sever the bond
between two. This love need not be romantic, though it is usually stereotyped as such. Platonic,
Familial and Unconditional are types of love too. And out of any other being on earth, who feels
the flow of love better than Sirens?
The Sirens who claim to be of the Chorus of Turandot claim that something powerful is born
from the connection between people, that new worlds and perspectives and even lives can be
born from it. The Matchmakers believe if they can inspire love between people, societies and
nations, then they believe the people would be compelled and strong enough to stop the Deluge
entirely…
Members of this Chorus often have an obsession on love or on the nature of love itself. The
stereotypical idea one gets is that they sing of love at each moment they get, trying to get ideal
people together, and for the most part this is true. Some Sirens do go to them to help them find a
source of a Relationship. However, this stereotype has a darker half, made up with
Homewreckers who instead of bringing people together, they destroy relationships in their wake.
Some of these relationships were already breaking apart, or they were damaging ones that
shouldn’t be allowed to continue. But accusations arise that a few Homewreckers have an utterly
fanatical definition of love, that certain types shouldn’t be allowed to exist and make it their duty
to exterminating it.
Regardless of whoever joins the Chorus, one thing's for certain. They must have an Empathy
rating of 3 and above.
The Matchmaker may simply lay a hand on her target and ask questions relating to the subject’s
relationships, which can target the following and that the ST is expected to answer to the best of
his ability. The Matchmaker may only ever ask a number of questions equal to her Empathy
rating and dealing with the following concepts:
● The description of someone the subject loves.
● The nature of that love: familial, romantic, unconditional and/or platonic and whether the
sentiments are similar and different.
● The Amour rating the subject has towards a person, place or thing the Siren names.
● The Merit dot rating that describes a connection between the subject and other human
beings: i.e. what Social Merits the subject has or could be counted as towards other
human beings (Allies, Contacts, Mentor, Retainer, Mystery Cult Initiation, Staff,
Relationship and True Friend merits).
● Any Kinks or Comforts within a relationship or equivalent.
A Matchmaker may also edit already existing Relationships, as well. She may use her unspent
Empathy dots to add or subtract Kinks and Comforts at a rate of 1:1. A Matchmaker may take
out all the Kinks from a Relationship or a Homewrecker may deprive a relationship of it’s
Comforts in this fashion.
The funny thing about humanity is how often they deem what is acceptable and what is not.
What’s also funny is how often one thing that was once legal can become illegal. One of the
many things that have suffered from these instances is the various amounts of medical practices
and drugs throughout the ages that have withstood legalization and criminalization often around
the same time, as well as the medical practices that lead to their creation.
Going along with this, the Doctors are invested for the progression of medicine and making use
of the fruits of its labors, be it for the needs of survival or the uses of recreation. Like most other
Choruses, this one is often split between elder Sirens who believe that drugs and their uses
shouldn’t be tampered with and an ever growing, often more youthful, crowd of Sirens who
think it to be best to legalize substances. The elder Sirens argue that drugs cause health problems
and lead people to the equivalent of “sticking their heads in the ground and not fixing their own
problems” as well as the obvious “tampering in god’s domain” that the Flensers often cross,
whereas younger Sirens believe that medicinal practices are wholly beneficial for humanity, that
the drug wars are basically an extended prohibition and more money would be made for
humanity’s benefit if it were all just legalized.
The Peddlers and Requirement: The types who join the Chorus are usually the Sirens of
Vaporia, mainly because taking medicine is almost always simply a choice for the person taking
it, or of the Currents of Healing or Lethe. Healing because it helps their cause, and Lethe are
obvious vanguards for the production of medicine for the good of humanity.
Members are usually split between the older, more cynical crowd and the younger more
idealistic one. It’s the elder crowd that earned the nickname “Prosecutors” for the Chorus,
questioning whether or not medicine follows the code of ethics (from the Hippocratic Oath to
one they’ve made up from chicken scratch) and punishing “violators” of that supposed oath.
Meanwhile, the younger, more idealistic crowd often follows the banner of legalizing drugs
rather than messing with medical stuff as a whole, but given time most of them tend to pick up
on the other fields of medicine and then pursue advances within it. They’re also the reason the
Chorus can go by the nickname of Peddlers, more than a few have ties in underworld trade.
It should be obvious that this Chorus requires Medicine as it’s skill, for both drug application as
well as advances in medicine.
● What is the composition of the sickness, drugs, or the utensils/techniques being used in
the operation being done?
● What is the effects of the sickness, drugs, or the operation?
● What is the name of the sickness, drugs, or operation/techniques being used?
● What is the intended purpose, original or otherwise, of what the Siren is witnessing?
As a note, this Aria can detect the difference between marijuana and crushed up oregano.
Invested Aria:
The Song takes many forms. While the majority of Sirens prefer to sing their Verses or tap a
rhythm if they are denied their voice, it's easy to forget that the Song can convey through any
medium of music. Sirens of this Chorus delight in learning instruments and performing in
groups. They are, in some ways, the music industry of the Siren society. Although don't let their
endless revisions, practice and jam sessions fool you. These Sirens are as serious about warning
the world about the coming Deluge as much as any other. They find music performed on
instruments, blending and redefining genres into new styles and having a full assembly of
players to be one of the better ways to influence the world. Humanity is a species of romance and
passion, and the Sirens of this chorus will learn whatever instrument from distant cultures to help
adapt the flow of the Song for a new audience.
No means of producing music is off limits. Everything from marching big brass, hand carved
acoustic, the latest electronica remixes, raving metal and opera strings are only the tip of the
hodgepodge of styles mixed together in this Chorus.
A Chorus that gives the Song a medium to be heard through requires the Expression skill at 3
dots.
The band that performs together creates of symphony of music with increased effects. Members
of the Chorus can perform together to weave their Verses together in dynamic ways. This
requires the Chorus to use the same Introduction and at least one Opus, although individual
Conclusions provided by each member. Furthermore, the band gets an automatic success (that
doesn't count for an exceptional success) for each added instrument to apply towards any
particular Verse. The same automatic successes may also be used for a shared Trace.
She may compose additional music, and thus have separate banks of Pneuma for other known
Conclusions, for 15 Pneuma apiece.
The Deluge marks the death of the world. Sirens of this Chorus, in place of looking towards the
future Cataclysm to destroy an entire planet, track down other incursions of death. And they have
found their answers in the 'final' resting place of ghosts, the land of the dead in a great
Underworld from which the traces of lost souls and past epidemics can be discovered. Even more
distant in this autochthonous depths, perhaps the record of past cataclysms can be found. Maybe
the knowledge of what sweet relief death may bring, as the great dooming change that will
ravage the world at the Deluge.
Those that spend any time past the dark crevices and hell tunnels throughout the planet, down
into that dead domain, find the Underworld to be fragmented by rivers. Rivers not always of
water, rivers that include bone dust or congealed blood or lifeless seeds amongst other variations
on death and decay. Each soon reaching an ocean of fragments, the edge of the dead realms
where nothing that has passed beyond comes back. Sirens adapt to any body of water and the
dead rivers of the Underworld are no exception, as Sirens study these rivers and the dead
denizens that line their banks.
The Ferrymen and Requirements: It goes without saying that Polaria boasts quite the
representation of members, Death being their favored Opus after all. Discordia and Freshwater
follow next, with fewer numbers of the rest. As for Currents: Acheron, Cocytus, Lethe,
Phlegethon, Styx. Did you know that these are also iconic rivers amongst the multitude that
crisscross the Underworld? It is quite odd to consider that this Chorus is perhaps the one
mutually trusting sorority of the Abyssal Currents. Only Oceanus lacks a signature river,
although the agents of Echidna may lay claim to the boundless dead sea beyond. However the
reasons for seeking out the realm of the dead are varied, as this very Chorus can be wrought with
numerous strifes. Amongst the Celestial Currents you may find Conflict and Wisdom, perhaps
Buoyancy, more readily than any others.
For Sirens who deal in the rivers of the Underworld, they must know a very good deal of occult
to enter the ghostly realm, learn their way about the place and even know of the Old Laws and
Dead Dominions that dot the place, even if it doesn’t fall under the jurisdiction of the Rivers.
This requires Occult at 3 and Politics at 3.
Survivors of the Deluge are few and far between, compared to the population of earth from pre-
diluvian times. For some Sirens, with the knowledge that the death of an entire planet is coming
they look to the stars. When one door closes surely another must open? Or in this instance,
replace doors with planets. Those that study space theorize that further exploration and the
possible colonization of other planets is possible. If little more than a distant fantasy outpacing
current technology.
Cosmonauts seek to guide humanity along mankind's next wayward leap. Some see the moon or
Mars as likely candidates for future Civilizations, while others prefer such heavenly bodies to
remain domains where Nature may change course drastically unbothered by human lives. Still
others say that man will need to journey farther, the great Cataclysm could spell the end for our
solar system as well as earth, with the next planet capable of sustaining life is an untold eons of
lightyears away. And journeying space is a lonely trip.
Yet still other Sirens of this Chorus, more mindful of immediate needs, may deduce that it's a
failure of space travel or some wayward debris that could spell doom for planet Earth. The upper
limits of the atmosphere are as much a border to safeguard. Didn't an asteroid exterminate all the
dinosaurs?
