Chapter 1  Technology in the classroom: Cristina Costa

… and I have been introducing ICT to the classroom for a couple of years now. I started
with CD-ROMs that were available at the time. The aim was to have the students do some
research about the given topic and then write a text about it. Later I started to plan my
classes differently, so that they would be more dynamic and appealing to the students. We
started using the Internet. One of my first tasks was to complete this treasure hunt about
the Portuguese naval ships and virtually place the students in different ships. The purpose
was to have them exchange emails according to the assignments they were given during
the remaining weeks of the course.
More recently I put together a webquest for my students. The task consisted in creating
a Lisbon travel guide collaboratively. It was a success. The students had fun doing it. The
end result was published in a wiki.
This class also engaged in another project, a tribute to one of the last naval aviators
of the Portuguese navy. The idea was suggested by the teacher and the students accepted
it with enthusiasm. The task consisted in creating a website with the biography of the
naval officer, a podcast with messages from the students, and a photo story. Once again
the task was carried out with success. Besides that, we also placed the biography in the
Wikipedia.
