Rhythm and pitch are taught separately, s0 Ga the Srbdent ean work on one thing at 2 time. When the two aspects of reading are established, they can be combined successfully ata later date. Before beginning { Can Read Music the students should hhave done some 1g work. For pitch reading, students should have a baste understanding of how note names ae related to locations on the fingerboard. Teachers and parents shoold be Sure, if they are not already doing so, wo refer to notes by ni rather than by their locaton ("address"), ic. call notes “B’ Tather than "I on A", Trecommend first teaching the musical alphabet, then using flashcards to teach them the notes in first ‘position (one sting ata time). When working with flashcards, fhe notes should be sung atthe correct pitch (use the violin or 2 piano to establish the pitch). Students who have a well: Established pitch memory will lear to read much faster when they relate the writen nae 1 the sound in their bead. Singing the correct pitch can also develop and refine a student’ ear. Rhythmic prepannsion should be done as well. Initially T use flashcards with the "Twinkle" rhythms, each quarter-note beat on 4 card (Le, four 1/16 notes, or two 1/8 notes, one 1/4 ole, ec). A half-note card is twice as wide as a quarter note beat. The thythms contained in the “Twinkle” theme and ‘variations give a very good foundation for rhythmic reading, and the child can astociate the written rhythm with a sound that he or she has already interal-zed. Initially, I call the rhythms by the ‘names which the students use for the “Twinkle” variations, and talk aboot quarter nots, eighth notes, et. aftr they have leamed toclap and play the ryt. {Con Read Music's tended ote vied a home, with the teacher checking progres at esons every meek of two. Lessons 48-50 use the low Second finger pattern (half-step between 1 and 2, whole step between 2 and 3), On the advice of a number of young rusicians, Ihave used accidentals rather than key signatures. Studs wll probably ned wo be old about he rls that an tccidental apples to an entre measure. To encourage students 10 ead notes rather than aumbers, finger numbers are not used in this book except in the guide atthe pp ofthe page when a new pitch sinouduced. Begining rede may inkily eed o ave th pret point out the notes to help the childs eyes follow on the page. Experienced readers move their eyes several notes ahead of what they are playing. The parent can help the child learn wo read ahead bby pointing a note or two past the note being played. The student should be encouraged to lay with a steady pulse, and not to go ‘back to fix mistakes. Often a child wil need to play aline several times to eliminate hesitations. The parent can help develop ‘hythmic awareness by counting or tapping a steady beat. | would like to thank my parents Frances and Kenneth Martin for their continual support and encouragement, T am grateful to Patricia Shand for her wise advice and editing ssisiance, and tothe hundreds of students who have helped me begin to understand learning.
