Model Scope and Limitations

1. Describe the scope and the research question/problem intended to be addressed by your model.

Reinforced masonry is a structural material widely used in the construction of medium and high
rise in the US. However, there are several behaviors of masonry due to lateral and vertical loads
that cannot be predicted.
The idea is to build a model in which shear response and behavior could be predicted due to
multiple variables, such as geometry, grouting, reinforcement, physical properties, etc.
2. Describe the source(s) of data to be used to create your model. If you are generating data through
experimentation, briefly describe the experiment.

Several studies of masonry behavior have been developed by many authors, so the idea is to
get data from these studies in order to build the model. These are experimental data obtained
from different studies about shear response of reinforced masonry walls.
3. List the anticipated limitations of your model.

The principal limitation that this model could suffer, is the access to the studies in order to get
the data. So, the amount of data that could be gathered is one of the greatest limitations that it
could have. Also, the variables distributions need to be classified and well understood in order
to run this model.
4. Describe the anticipated inputs and outputs of your model.

As inputs for the model, it is expected to have the geometry of the walls, compressive strength
of the grout and the masonry, yield strength of the horizontal and vertical reinforcements,
experimental shear and axial strength (studies) and some other properties.
For outputs, predicted shear and axial strength of masonry walls.
5. List potential literature references using the Modern Language Association (MLA) citation format
(minimum 10 references)
