TRAVEL 12

Introduction

Traveling isn't as straightforward as picking a destination and booking your hotel or plane

tickets. Some people appear to travel with ease while others have a nightmarish experience and

vow to never do it again. If traveling by yourself or with a small family can be this crazy, then

how does and entire team travel together and stay focused for a game at the same time? The

answer is simple, they have an agenda in place and a schedule to follow. They have a detailed

travel itinerary that encompasses all the information needed to maneuver from place to place and

exactly who to talk to. Having a detailed itinerary will help decrease communication errors,

maximize your time, and manage your team’s expenses. “Traveling together with a sports team

for an overnight tournament can be an excellent experience. The team can spend time playing the

sport they all love, bonding together as they spend time at the hotel, and enjoying the excitement

of competing at a high level” (GTI Travel, 2017).

The Plan

An itinerary is a detailed plan for any journey; the more places and stops, the more detail

that is required (Dictionary, 2019). There are several highlights to possessing a comprehensive

itinerary for all your traveling adventures. The most important to this author is communication.

As a coach one of your main focal points of the occupation is to constantly impart knowledge on

staff and team. The travel plans and in-depth coordination that comes with it should be

communicated as well as the next play is to a quarterback on the field. It is also a burden of

many tasks that can and should be delegated as needed.

Travel itineraries will help to keep a team and staff on schedule and will assist in

maximizing available time. A proper itinerary guarantee the latter. In order for this to remain true
TRAVEL 13

it must include any and all accounts of events and activities and time in between these events.

Adding time for unanticipated conditions and delays will further secure your successful plan.

While things may happen that are still unplanned for, a meticulous plan we help you become

more flexible as the schedule is altered (Silva, 2019).

Learning to manage your money is part of growing up. Being able to manage an entire

sports program’s expenditures is a part of growing as an adult in sports management field. This

is another important aspect directly and positively associated with a well thought-out plan.

Travel itineraries should have precise figures enclosed so you can better estimate the cost of your

club’s travel before you run into mistakes. This information will help you plan the budget and

help to reduce any financial strain that may be inherent with travel (Silva, 2019).

Conclusion

Traveling isn’t as easy as jumping up and hitching a ride on an airplane. It takes

deliberate planning to successfully connect all the pieces need to make a trip a victory. While

some do this with a particular sense of calmness, other will struggle. It is not uncommon to hire a

professional to assist in these efforts. A well thought-out itinerary will provide excellent

communication tools, maximize a team’s time and help with financial planning.
