In the conversion of the Rue Boileau offices
(1994–1996), the apartments were largely
determined by the demands of future pur-
chasers and negotiated with them. In the
case of homes designed for Apollonia in
Marseilles and Bordeaux, a step of this kind
was not conceivable due to this particular
client’s expeditious method of selling all
apartments within twenty-four hours. It
was therefore in the project phase that the
diversity of demands made were taken into
account, with the creation of dozens of plan
variations.

becomes a demand for the design of circula-
tion space giving ease to the users’ move-

Lion’s interventions in the galleries of the
Grand Louvre, whereas, in the Nantes com-
plex, the generous layout of the great hall

room is doubled by the clarity of the circular

Museum, since the modifications were per-

hidden in an interior courtyard.43 Like in
Blérancourt, the restrained and linear
addition avoided stealing the show from the
historic building on Rue François Miron to
which it was joined by way of a glass link, to
name another similarity. On the ground floor

into galleries, the spaces of the original Hôtel

He thus carried out two studies on the
Porte d’Italie and the Porte de Saint-Cloud,
endeavouring to “prove that it was possible
to pass from the centre to the periphery
without being aware of it” and without the
notion of a “nostalgic and retrograde” gate
before the City of Paris. His approach to the
question was — once more — founded on a
“return to geography,” and thus to consider-

of 150,000 inhabitants whose seafront had
been transformed into a motorway; it was a
question of making a saturated artery more
civilised with two contradicting qualities —
that of fluid high-speed traffic and that of
good local public transport. These were the
expectations of the local authorities. Yves
Lion was often able to cite the example of
the successful provision of over-dimensioning
the highways in Henri Prost’s plans designed
between 1914 and 1923 for Moroccan
towns, permitting them, seven decades later,
to accommodate very heavy traffic.64 But
in the redevelopment of an existing road
between two inflexible façade lines the organ-
isation of spaces was a zero-sum game. The
provisions made for parking spaces were at
the cost of mobility, if strictly seen from the
domain of the road. The work proposed in
this discontinued project essentially involved
the definition of principal cross-sections and
of new relations between the street and its
borders, notably by eliminating cul-de-sac
access streets to the adjacent blocks.
