Ficciones Essay Prompts

Prompt A – Over the course of our study, we have analyzed the use of many Borgesian motifs. These
include: cyclical time, invented writings, labryinths and libraries, mirrors or doubling, life as a dream,
circles and infinity, chance versus fate, and repetitions. Choose one of the Borgesian motifs and analyze
how it is used in three of the stories of Ficciones.

Prompt B – Christopher Nolan has stated that “The Secret Miracle” was the inspiration for his film,
“Inception.” Analyze how Nolan uses three different Borgesian motifs in his film and how they
contribute to plot, character, symbol, or any other literary characteristic.

Prompt C – Many critics debate over the meaning of the ending of “The South.” Justify your
understanding of the ending by giving three details from the text that would explain your
understanding. Be sure to analyze these details and determine their purpose to the text and plot.
