Option F: Food and Health.

11.)
a. The estimated percentage increase in the total number of affluent people
from 2009 to 2030 Is approximately 72.5%
b. The number of affluent people in Africa is technically projected to decrease,
but overall, it stays relatively the same.
c. Rising affluence, has a great impact in food consumption, if affluence in Asia
increase the food consumption in regions such as Africa, will be made to
produce more output and overall GDP may increase.
d. HALE, or Health adjusted life expectancy reflects the number of years a
person is expected to live in good health, given certain demographics, such as
mortality rates, life expectancy, disease/disability, prevalence rates. One
advantage of Using HALE as an indicator of health is that, HALE draws
attention to growing influence of chronic illnesses on the quality of life.Hale
also has disadvantages, there is a lack of reliable data especially from low
income countries, such as mortality rate. Another disadvantage would be
that it is a hypothetical measure, and can really be misinterpreted by the
general public.
12.) 10 mark question
Famine; a famine is a long is a widespread, prolonged shortage of food, that causes diseases
and death from starvation within a geographical area, and there have been famines in many
countries and there are factors that determine these, social, political, economical,
environmental, and demographic. The factors that affect famine in countries such as South
Sudan and Yemen, and can be looked at socially politically, economically environmentally
and demographically.

Many factors have contributed to famine and in a country or region, it is very important to
ensure food security, which is all people at all times have sufficient and safe access to
nutritious food and there are certain factors that contribute to the severity of a famine in a
country. Socially, there must be a safe social environment and that everyone is content
otherwise there can be troubles. For example, If there is riots compromising safety, if there
is a lot of corruption, or social unrest in a country, or region the people will eventually suffer
which will result in famine. For example, in South Sudan there is a large amount of
corruption and social unrest leaving many to die. Political, politics plays a great role in a
famine, especially if there is a war, it is unsafe and dangerous for citizens to try and obtain
food because land can be destroyed, factories and more, meaning food availability will
decrease, in Yemen currently due to the war a famine has been going on since 2016 and is
still going on up until today, and because of the war all food networks are shut.
Economically, if a country is going through a rough patch the chances for a famine to reduce
are scarce the country will not be able to support its people and wont be able to provide for
them, and will result in starvation, Yemen is another good example here, due to the inability
to work children are forced to rely on family members to provide, but when in a civil war, if
the parents cannot work, the government must support the family to keep them alive and
healthy due to the economic state in Yemen over 85,000 people have died in Yemen.
Environmentally the country needs to be in a good position to be able to attain food security
and reduce the severity of a famine, because of the increase in heat in south Sudan along
with the famine there is also a drought and 6 million south Sudanese people, are extremely
food insecure.

Overall, there are many factors that can affect the severity of a famine, but personally, the
most significant ones are political and environmental.
