 Particle “の”
• In Chapter 1 の is used to connect two
nouns when N3 modifies N2.
• Sometimes it can be helpful to think of
the particle の as the English word “ of ”.
• When used as a Possessive Particle, iｔ
is similar to the “ ’s ” in English.

8. S1ですか、 S2ですか。
•This is a question asking the listener to
choose between 2 or more alternatives for
the answer. In answering this type of
question, it is usual to state the chosen
alternative, without saying either 「はい」 or
「いいえ」 is used.
S1 : これは 「シ」ですか。Is this a “シ” ?
S2 : これは 「ツ」ですか。Is this a “ツ”?
 これは 「シ」ですか、 「ツ」ですか。

This expression is used when the speaker
receives new information and shows that he
or she understands it. It is pronounced with a
falling intonation.
A: この傘は あなたのですか。

B: … No, it’s Mr. Schmidt‘s.
