An Evaluation of an English Language Material

Evaluate Lesson 1 of a Grade 7 book based on your instructor's lecture, Dr. Barrot's webinar, and
Dr. Gutierrez's criteria for evaluating English language materials.
The External Evaluation

The lesson started by checking their prior knowledge through a KWL chart. This is a very good start. This
would give the the ideas what to cover or target in the lesson. The poems are presented. But before the
presentation, there is a short background of the author and the type of the poem. This will contribute
partly in understanding the whole idea of the poem. Good thing also is that, there are unlocking
difficulties and some questions on the right side of the book.

And now, followed by these three activities. The activities and tests are related to learner needs and to
what is taught in course material. It has included variety of activities that will test how far is their
understanding of the poems. The materials are graded and sequenced. Yes, materials are suitable for
different learning styles. Materials are sufficiently “transparent” to motivate both teacher and students.
There are appropriate texts provided to test the reading comprehension of the child.

One thing is, the lesson doesn’t have target learning outcomes. It is very important to have LOs in every
lesson to make sure if the skills are covered. Since the abstract is about poems, the skill integrated and
incorporated is reading.

I must suggest to add activities that will involve their psychomotor skills. Because as what I have
observed, the activities are more focused on their cognitive skills. “Learning by doing is very effective
especially if you are teaching literature to children. The retention is better that way.
