Introduction to Network Security (Practical – 02)

1. What are the possible ways for protecting Files, Directories,

and USB in Windows and Unix?
 Files and Directories: - 1. the files system should have
an appropriate file recovery software like recuva,
stellar etc.
2. One should maintain regular backups of all the
necessary files in the system.
3. Hide all the private files in your system and if
possible, make them password protected by making an
archive.
4. One should encrypt all the important files and
folders. File Encryption enables users and administrators
to encrypt specific files and folders on a device, or on
file shares within the network and can even be applied on
top of a device already protected by drive encryption –
thus adding an additional layer of protection.
 USB: - 1. For USB’s then we can use write protectors. A
software write protector will effectively prevent any
data from being deleted as well as protect the device
from malware being written onto your drive.

2. Study the use of network investigation tools like WHOIS, dig,

traceroute, nslookup to gather information about networks and
domain registrars.
 whois: - Whois searches for an object in a WHOIS
database. WHOIS is a query and response protocol that is
widely used for querying databases that store the
registered users of an Internet resource, such as a
domain name or an IP address block, but is also used for
a wider range of other information.

 dig: - Dig is a networking tool that can query DNS
servers for information. It can be very helpful for
diagnosing problems with domain pointing and is a 14 good
way to verify that your configuration is working. The
most basic way to use dig is to specify the domain we
wish to query: dig example.com.
 traceroute: - Traceroute prints the route that packets
take to a network host. Traceroute utility uses the TTL
field in the IP header to achieve its operation.

 nslookup: - The nslookup command is used to query

internet name servers interactively for information.
nslookup, which stands for "name server lookup", is a
useful tool for finding out information about a named
domain. By default, nslookup will translate a domain name
to an IP address (or vice versa).
3. Analyze recent software updates tools. Install and deploy any
one software updates tool in your system and show the results
for the same.
A software update tool is a program you install on your
computer to help you keep all your other software updated to
their latest versions. Install one of these freeware software
updates and it will first automatically identify all of your
software and then determine if an update is available. E.g.,
Atera RMM Patch Management, SolarWinds etc.
