Answer all Questions

PART – A (5 x 2 Marks= 10 Marks)

1. How is a V – Belt designated?

2. Give the main components of a chain drive.
3. What are the possible ways by which a chain drive may fail?
4. Write the advantages of helical gear drive over spur gear drive.
5. Define module.

PART – B (1x16 Mark+3X8Marks=40 Marks)

6. A stone crushing machine receives power from a motor rated at 50 Kw at 1800rpm by

means of flat belts. The pulley diameters are 200mm and 700mm.Centre distance
between the two pulleys is 4000mm.Design the belt drive if the direction of rotation of
two pulleys is opposite to each other. (16)

7. Design a pair of spur gears to transmit 20 kW at a pinion speed of 1400 rpm. The
transmission ratio is 4 assume suitable material and stress. (8)

8. Design a pair of helical gears to transmit 10 kW at 1000 rpm of the pinion reduction
ratio of 5 is required. (8)

9. select a suitable roller chain for the specified details given below:

Power to be transmitted = 30Kw at a small sprocket speed of 1000rpm.The driven

shaft runs at 500 rpm.The chain will be subjected to intermittent. Over load of
100%.Take Ks = 2.0. (8)
