STRUCTURE BORNE
AIR BORNE NOISE
NOISE

STRUCTURE BORNE NOISE

• the sound generated from a vibrating source / impact event.

•Structure borne sound are transmitted when sound arises from the actual impact of
an object on abuilding element such as wall , floor , ceiling .
•source- footsteps , moving furniture ,
operating machinery

•The acoustic energy created by these vibrations is transmitted into the structure
of a building (Eg floors , walls , pipe- work etc) or into mechanical systems ( Eg Metal
frames , panel work , supports etc.)
• This energy travels through solid structures and released as air borne noise at different
locations within building or mechanical systems.
Structure borne noise comprises of five process
1. Generation – Source of oscillation

2. Transmission – The transfer of oscillatory energy from source to the structure

3. Propagation – The distribution of energy throughout the structural system.

4. Attenuation – When waves moving through a structures encounter structural
or material changes they can be partially reflected which reduces
the energy transmitted and so attenuates the sound.
5. Radiation – The emission of sound from an exposed surface.
AIR BORNE NOISE
- The noise that comes into the buildings through air from distant sources is called
air borne noise .

- A part of it directly enters the hall through open windows , doors or other
openings while another part enters through walls and floors.

- When sound waves travelling through air reach a building element they hit it and
cause it to vibrate and these vibrations travel through structures or building and
are radiated out the other side.
AIR BORNE NOISE CONTROL

- The building may be located on quite sites away from traffic , market places ,
railway stations and airports etc.

- They may be shaded from noise by imposing a buffer zone of trees , gardens
etc.

-Site selection to control air borne noises :

- If possible site should be away from busy street , railways and airports etc.
- If not, the orientation , layout , structural design should be done accordingly.
