Anno UNciA 3 ig 8 ky latin 9! Distribution Automation Equipment A Generation Ahead New demands for managing distribution systems call for devices inherently reliable and intelligent. They require a built-in capal for data gathering and communications, along with extremely low maintenance. The ABB SafeNet solution meets each of these demands. The ABB VR-3S Recloser is the first in the SafeNet Switch family. It brings powerful microprocessor control to recloser technology, advancing management capal S for fault location, adaptive protection and monitoring, power quality and communications. With all of the features that the VR-3S has to offer, it will be a flexible building block in any automation system. Built-In Benefits ‘The VR-3S accomplishes the job of a traditional recloser reliably and efficiently. Safe and stable, the VR-3S offers an environmental edge, climinating. the need for gas or oil. Encapsulated vacuum inter- rupters produce clean interruption with minimum and even contact wear over a wide temperature range. Like the unit's simplified magnetic actuators, these vacuum interrupters are capable of thousands ‘of operations without scheduled maintenance. And there's more: digital information and communica. tions to enhance system-wide performance. As a result of this breakthrough functionality, ABB offers a recloser that revolutionizes the market. Low Maintenance ABB's unique encapsulated system is safe, reliable, and environmentally sound. Vacuum interrupters perform a large number of mechanical and clectr- ‘al operations with small contact movement and low breaking energy. The VR-3S requires neither cil nor gas; the pole assembly is encased in a solid polyurethane dielectric, the insulating material of choice for this function. In ABB’ fifteen years of ‘outdoor experience with polyurethane encapsulated ‘medium voltage applications, the material has ablished a clear edge in permanent flexibility, low stress, superior arc track resistance, and immunity to the effects of ozone and ultraviolet rays. Rugged, light and non-britde, polyurethane simplifies transportation to remote locations and resists vandalization. Using proven hardened electronics a well as insulating material without oil or gas, ABB has produced a recloser rated for temperature swings from -50° to 70°C Because the VR-3S is equipped with magnetic actuators, responsible for opening and closing the recloser’s main contacts, the number of parts is drastically reduced, increasing reliability. This patented system has fewer moving parts than any other available recloser. The light-weight upper unit is ideal for pole mounting. The small control cabinet attaches easily lower on the pole, providing simple access to the wealth of information it records and ‘The recloser has no scheduled maintenance beyond changing the battery every 5-7 years — and the battery can be tested locally through a direct front- panel button, or remotely through a communications interface. Meanwhile, the unit offers a 34-hour battery carryover upon loss of power. With continual self-checking and status indication, these features make the PCD2000 control unit essentially maintenance fre. Integral Communications for Distribution Automation ‘The PCD2000 control, which forms an essential part of the VR-3S, provides a SCADA-friendly interface for remote communication with existing SCADA systems via Modbus™ RTU, Modbus™ ASCH, and DNP 3.0™ protocols. The controller can be repro- grammed to implement other protocols. This built in communication allows remote operation of the reclose. RS-232 and RS-485 ports are available, making the recloser ready for external links through radio or modem. The fiber optic option provides a port for direct fiber optic communications. The cabinet includes space fora radio or modem, eliminating the need for a dedicated RTU, reducing installation and ‘operating costs. The front-mounted optical port matches ports on electronic meters. Data can be downloaded of uploaded on site through this optical port, or remotely through one of the communica- tions links. Information Gathering and Analysis: Metering and Oscillography ‘The PCD2000 meters current and voltage (when voltage input is supplied) co 19% accuracy, measuring kWh and KVARh, power factor, demand Watts and VARs, and frequency. For load profile data, the user selects a time interval between samples: 5, 15, 30, ‘or 60 minutes. This choice yields a load profil record of 13.3, 40, 80, oF 160 days, respectively. TThe data is stored in a format easily imported t0 word processing or spreadsheet programs for analysis and graphing, For detailed oscillographic data, users select events to be monitored. Waveform data captured by the lle is sampled and stored at a resolution of 32 points per cycle, each waveform can be stored for 64 cycles. Users can program the trigger po in quar cycles of prefault and faule data as possible. When downloaded for power quality and system distur. bance analysis, this data can prove to be an excellent to0l for evaluation, le increments to provide as many The PCD2000% fault detection capabilities will detect even intermirtent faults. Location of faults is simplified by a patented ABB fault algorithm. The uunit works in background mode to estimate faule resistance and to compute the appatent distance to the fault, maintaining protection integrity while helping to pinpoint the trouble spot. The PCD2000 stores the last 32 occurrences of a fault and 128 sequences of events; easy local or remote downloading of this information provides an invaluable snapshot of the recloser’s recent history. Reliable and Sophisticated System Protection ‘When configuring their system, PCD2000 users are given a choice among three curve standards — ANSI, IEC, or recloser — or, for even greater flexi bility, users may program custom curves to match their particular system parameters. Once the curve standard is sclected, users may program three independent seting groups: ‘Primary settings ‘+ Alc I settings (often “safety” parameters) + Ale 2 settings (often “wint temperature parameters) Ik easy to switch from one to another of these three setting groups, either remotely or on site, saving a tremendous amount of time. Protective settings ae stored in nonvolatile memory, so that power failure doesnt force reprogramming, ‘The comprehensive array of features built inco the PCD2000 will enhance the reliability of the entire energy distribution system. These include, in addi- tion to overcurrent protection, over and under voleage control or alarming, frequency shedding and restoration, negative sequence protection, directional protection, sensitive earth fault, sequence coordination and cold load timer. Programming may be accomplished in any of three ‘ways, allowing che user to choose the one that’ most efficient for the task at hand + Through the clearly marked front panel buttons, + Using a computer on site to download or upload information through the front optical port, or + Via remore communications links using radio, modem or fiber optic technology Pushing Ahead: New Features The PCD2000 is continually being enhanced with useful features to make it the premier control avail- able in the industry. Some of these features are as follows ‘+ WinPCD: Enhanced communications/program- ming software now includes dial up feature and extensive remote control capability + Power Quality: Implemented per ANSI/IEEE Sed. 1159, records voltage sags, swells, and total harmonic distortion. This allows the user to take advantage of the recloser’s unique position on a line to analyze power quality problems Customizable Tagging Function: For remote or local (with optional switch) taggis requirements Single Phase Tripping: Optional feature which will prevent 2/3 of outages on line-ground faults, only available with the VR-3S recloser ‘a woath of inirmaton ‘colectad and stored by the PCD2 Easy one-step buttons pr vide a simple intertace with Integrated recioser functions Feexble achtecture ‘lows eaby upgrades for the POD2000.
