Campus Vocabulary

1. ace (v): To receive a grade of A.
Example: Find someone who aced the course to help you.

2. advisor (n): A person who helps students make decisions about their academic programs.
Example: Dr. Jones is the academic advisor for the engineering students.

3. all-nighter (n): A study session that lasts all night.


Example: I have to pull an all-nighter in order to be ready for the final exams.

4. assignment (n): Work that must be done as part of the requirements for a class.
Example: The assignment was to read two chapters in the text book.

5. assistantship (n): An opportunity for a graduate student to teach or do research in exchange for a stipend.
Example: The assistantship doesn’t pay as much as I thought it would.

6. audit (v): To attend a course without credit.


Example: You could audit the course if you don’t need the credit.

7. bear (n): a difficult class.


Example: I heard that Dr. Young’s class is a real bear.

8. be behind (v): to be late; to have a lot of work to do.


Example: You are behind in your physics class so you should study.

9. bring up (v): to improve.


Example: If I don’t study more, I won’t be able to bring up my grades.

10. call on (v): to acknowledge in class; to invite to speak.


Example: The professor calls on the students who sit in the front more often than those who sit in
back

11. call the roll (v): to read the names on a class roster in order to take attendance.
Example: Some professors don’t call the roll, but Dr. Peterson always does.

12. carrel (n): a private study space in the stacks of the library.
Example: You should go to the library early in the evening if you want a carrel.

13. check out (v): to borrow.


Example: I need a new library card to be able to check out books.

14. closed out (adj): to be denied access to a class because you did not register early.
Example: You have to register early to avoid being closed out of the classes you want.

15. coed (adj): an abbreviation for coeducational, which is a system of education in which both men and
women attend the same school or classes.
Example: My parents don’t want me to live in a coed dormitory.
