1. With the assistance of the judgment of Navtej Singh Johar & Ors. v. Union of
India, (2018) 10 SCC 1 enumerate briefly the different external aids of construction?

What do you understand by doctrine of Ejusdem generis? Also discuss when this rule
is not applicable. Explain the doctrine using suitable case laws.

2. The words of a statute are first understood in their natural, ordinary or popular sense
unless there is something to the contrary in the context or object? Identify and explain
the rule with relevant case laws.

If you are drafting a legislation, according to you what are the important parts of a
statute? Bring out the significance of each part of the statute.

3. Write a brief note on the following:

b) Prospective and Retrospective operation of the statute

a) Explain Golden rule of construction with help of case laws


b) Bring out the difference between proviso, exception and saving clause

4. Critically evaluate Justice Scalia’s theory of Statutory Interpretation.

B) What is the consequence of repeal of a statute?

5. While explaining the legal proposition laid down in the case of B. Shah v. Presiding
officer, Labour Court, 1978 AIR 12 bring out the difference between beneficial
construction and strict construction of statutes.

Explain how the court dealt with the rule of purposive construction in the judgement
of S.R Chaudhuri v. State of Punjab, (2001) 7 SCC 126.
