The examination contributes a maximum of 50 marks towards your final grade.

In order to pass the course you must obtain a minimum of 25 marks (50%) in this
paper.

All questions carry equal marks.

YOU MUST ATTEMPT QUESTION 1

Question 1
During our visit to the office of Director of Town and Country Planning, Nasinu
Town Council and the Director of Environment office, discuss some learning
outcomes you think yiu learnt during this field visit. Looking back at the visit now,
include some of things which, you think should have been included but was not
included or discussed during our field visit..

Question 2
One of the purposes of planning is to “ provide framework for co-ordination of
development decisions by private companies, individuals and public authorities"
Explain why this is necessary. What would be the consequences if there were no
framework of co-ordination? Briefly comment on the present system of co-ordination
whether it is beneficial to retain it.

To what extent does the concern of Town and Country Planning are considered by the
following issues. Show clear example. It is suggested that you answer this question by
the application of your planning knowledge. It is also suggested that an appropriate
answer shall consist of one (1) page of written work with appropriate illustrations.

Question 4
The planning system process encompass the determination of objectives, policy
making, consultation and participation, formal dispute resolution, development
control, implementation and evaluation of outcome. Critically comment on the
development control process and explain how it contributes to conflict and dispute
resolution. Use your knowledge from the field trip to Director of Town and Country
Planning office and Nasinu Town Council.

Question 5
More radical critic of Bruntland argue however that the threats to sustainability are
inherent in our current arrangements for pursuing economic growth and sustainability
is not conceivable unless we structure our social and economic institutions radically in
pursuit of greater social and environmental justice. Discuss the merits and demerits of
Bruntland's definition of sustainable development..

Consider the shopping centre at:
a) Cost U Less Supermarket, Macdonald Restaurant next to Cost U Less, The
Sports City Complex and
b) Any other shopping centre that you are familiar with
Critically comment on their locations, the physical design of the shopping centre and
the range of goods and services provided within the centre and the amenities provided
at the centre.

Identify issues and problems of the housing sector in your country and discuss how
Governments and the private sector are addressing these issues and problems?

Define the following terms in at least one page for each item, as used in the Town and
Country Planning literature and give appropriate illustrations;

b) Incrementalism
c) Conflicts and disputes
d) Rationality and Comprehensiveness
e) Integrated transport policy.
