B SCOPE

The requirements of this standard apply to all classes of materials supplied in Black and Grey Box
items, for use on all JLR vehicles.

C OBJECT

This standard provides direction to the suppliers of Black and Grey Box components and
assemblies, and the suppliers of materials used therein, regarding the required material,
component, and process documentation.

D REVIEW

F DEFINITION

1 For the purposes of this standard, Black Box items are defined as those items which are
purchased by JLR from suppliers where JLR have had no participation in the design and/or
verification of the item.

2 For the purposes of this standard, Grey Box items are defined as those items which are jointly
designed by the supplier and JLR. JLR will direct the design and/or material selection for portions
of a Grey Box item.

G GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

1 Material suppliers and component/assembly suppliers shall conform to the latest issues of all
related documents.

2 Material suppliers and component/assembly suppliers shall conform to the JLR document
STJLR.51.5226 Standard Requirements for Production Materials.

3 Material suppliers and component/assembly suppliers shall conform to the JLR document
STJLR.51.5229 Environmental Quality Requirements for Interior Materials and Components.

4 Material suppliers and component/assembly suppliers shall report on the materials content of their
products using the International Material Data System (IMDS). Suppliers must refer to the JLR
document STJLR.99.9999 the Restricted Substance Management Standard.

5 Polymeric (plastic, elastomeric, fibre and synthetic fibre) parts shall be identified for recycling in
accordance with the JLR document PLMJLR.00.0029 Identification of Polymeric Materials.

H SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

1 Black Box Components and Assemblies

1.1 All materials, including finishes and coatings, at the supplied component/assembly interface
shall be defined on the Engineering Drawing as described in the JLR document PDP 020
The Use of Standards and Specifications. In cases where no recognized standard is
available then the material type must be stated e.g. >PA66-GF30<, >EPDM<, etc. along with
any associated processes e.g. Anodised, Shot Peened, etc. Generic information e.g. Plastic,
Steel, Plated, etc. is not acceptable.

1.2 For all other materials, not identified on the Engineering Drawing, the supplier shall maintain
a Materials Document that lists all component parts including supplier part numbers and the
materials used for each part. The purpose of this Document is to provide ready access to
this information if JLR become engaged in solving issues related to the component or
assembly. Industry standards (SAE, ISO, etc) will be the preferred method of specification,
but supplier standards are acceptable provided that they are current and traceable. If no
standards exist, then the relevant information shall be listed as outlined in H1.1.

1.3 JLR will acknowledge the materials, finishes, and processes listed on the Engineering
Drawing and in the Materials Document, but will neither accept nor approve their usage. JLR
Materials Engineering will not review the Materials Document prior to Engineering Drawing
release but will review, where necessary, the materials listed on the Engineering Drawing to
ensure interface best practice, e.g. galvanic compatibility and proper joint design, prior to
Engineering Drawing release.

2 Grey Box Components and Assemblies

2.1 All materials, including finishes and coatings, at the supplied component/assembly interface,
plus corrosion preventative finishes and/or coatings on all external surfaces, and all JLR
specified materials and finishes, shall be defined on the Engineering Drawing as described
in the JLR document PDP 020 The Use of Standards and Specifications. In cases where no
recognized standard is available then the material type must be stated e.g. >PA66-GF30<,
>EPDM<, etc. along with any associated processes e.g. Anodised, Shot Peened, etc.
Generic information, e.g. Plastic, Steel, Plated, etc. is not acceptable.

2.2 For all other materials, not identified on the Engineering Drawing, the supplier shall maintain
a Materials Document that lists all component parts including supplier part numbers and the
materials used for each part.

2.3 A JLR Materials Engineering review of a Grey Box Engineering Drawing approves the use of
the materials, finishes, and processes listed on that Engineering Drawing. JLR Materials
Engineering will not review the Materials Document prior to Engineering Drawing release
and neither accepts nor approves the materials listed therein.

2.4 Detailed information on the content and format of materials information appearing on
Engineering Drawings can be found in the JLR document PLMJLR.00.0026 NOTES.

I SUPPLIER SUBMISSIONS

When requested, as in H1.2 and H2.2, the supplier shall submit the Materials Document and/or
production representative samples for retention by Product Development and/or for evaluation by
Materials Engineering.
