EFFECT / IMPACT OF MIGRATION
ON SOCIAL AND URBAN AREAS
Rural Urban migration is a type of internal migration, which refers to
movement of people from rural regions to the urban areas of a country.

This migration has many multiple effects on economy, culture and

demography of both the rural as well as urban region –

 Rapid population increase in the urban areas causes limitation of

services and resources, thus effecting the overall physical
environment.
 For the migrants, rural to urban migration gives them access to
prevail more in education, healthcare and other services.
 Shortage of housing is quite acute as the urban area fails to
accommodate the rapidly growing city population. As a result,
slums and squatter settlements are widespread in different regions
of the city.
 Migration also results in greater job demand in the urban regions,
which results in greater unemployment rate.
 Due to poor living conditions, most of the unemployed rural
migrants get involved in informal sector and criminal activities.
Thus, a healthy social environment in the city is threatened.
 For the rural area, migration results in loss of labour and hence
effecting the agricultural productivity and slows down the local
economy.
 Rural communities lose human capital, particularly young adults
who are attracted to education and job opportunities in urban
centers. This often results in losses of traditional knowledge and
socio-cultural values, including agrodiversity and ethnobiological
knowledge.
