The concept of Kairos is somehow complex, but what do we mean by Kairos?

Way back in olden times, specifically Ancient Greece, the term “kairos” refers to an
ancient rhetorical principle that has gained importance in a variety of disciplines over the
centuries. In other words, Kairos is knowing what is most appropriate in a given
situation; for our purposes, consider it saying (or writing) the right thing at the right time.
It is not a straight forward instrument or methodology, instead kairos depends on
context. Both kairos and chronos literally mean "time" in Greek, but kairos does not
mean "time" in the same way as it does in English. In Greek, kairos represents
“qualitative” time, as in “the right time,” while chronos represents “quantitative” time, as
in “What time is it?” as well as "Will we have enough time?" Kairos refers to seizing or
even producing a perfect opportunity to convey a specific message.

When major events occur in your life, consider them in terms of kairos.”What is
your kairos moment?” This question made me think what moments in my life that I
made the most of opportunity. Let me tell you my kairos moment. When I was on Grade
12, I don’t know what would be my course in college. My friends already had their
chosen courses and university, but I was having a hard time choosing what course I am
going to take. I asked my best friend for an advice. I asked him “Pare, anong
magandang course sa college" and he answered “BS AMT (Aviation Maintenance
Technology) at BS Industrial Engineering”. “Ano yang mga course na ‘yan?” -I asked,
then he said “Yung BS AMT pre about sya sa aircraft maintenance at mataas daw
sahod nun pag nag trabaho ka na and yun din ang pinili ko na course.” I asked him
again “Eh yung BS Industrial Engineering pre ano yun?” he then replied, “ay pre, to be
honest ‘di ko rin alam kung ano magiging work mo nun, pero sabi ng tita ko magandang
course daw ‘yon kasi Industrial Engineer ang tita ko”. I asked him “anong work ng Tita
mo as an IE?”. “Safety officer sa isang manufacturing company”- he said. And that
conversation bewildered me what Industrial Engineers do, like “what’s their job” and
“what is their salary?” So I take my time and did some research about Industrial
Engineering course. The results were satisfying because the average salary for an
Industrial Engineering is 37,800 PHP. Their job is to optimize complex processes and
system, developing, improving and implementing integrated systems of people, money,
knowledge, and equipment. Industrial Engineers also combine knowledge of
engineering and health and safety to develop procedures and design systems to protect
people from illness and injury and property from damage. So basically, Industrial
Engineers are Jack of all trade because they can found in all sort of places. Thanks to
my best friend’s advice I became interested in Industrial Engineering course and ended
up taking it. As of today, I am currently 3 rd year student of Industrial Engineering course
in Rizal Technological University. What I can say is that, this course is not easy, me and
my co-students had many hard times but I really enjoyed this course and I don’t regret
taking this course. So what is my kairos moment in this experience? When I was having
a hard time making decisions about what will be my course, I take my time to asked an
advice to my friend and that advice was really helpful because now I am enjoying my
course. What I’m trying to say that, sometimes all we really need is a little time with our
friends and take your time with every decision and every choices you will make. We can
choose. We can decide to unplug and unwind. We can focus on doing fewer thing rather
than trying to do everything and we can be okay with process and excellence rather
than demanding perfection and expecting everything show up gift-wrapped. We could
seek to live a Kairos life, but to do that we need time; a time to treasure the
relationships, to make the most of our hours in our days and to embrace every season
as it comes. Each of us has the same number of hours in our days, but we don’t all
have the same number of days in our lives. At some point the clock will stop. What will
we have done with our hours, what will we have done with our days, we have time.
